He recorded Beulah at his own studio, as well as at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. White says in a statement, "Honestly, I tried to avoid [these new songs], but then I realized the only way I was going to get rid of them was if I wrote them down."

Triumph of songwriting and subtlety

Beulah is a subtle, beautifully crafted album that is both rich lyrically and melodically. For fans of The Civil Wars who were sad at the breakup, this album has all the strength of the songwriting that made that duo so powerful. However while the last CW album was somewhat scattered in style, John Paul's new offering feels cohesive and intentionally sparse the whole way through. Instrumentation is simple and fitting, B3 and cello adding texture where it's needed. The backing vocals of The Secret Sisters is, in my opinion, much more fitting to his songwriting style than Joy Williams' sometimes overbearing harmonies.

These songs feel at once vintage and fresh, melancholy and heartwarming (listen closely to the closing track "I'll Get Even" - a beautifully backward love song). My personal favorite is track 3, "The Once and Future Queen." Oh, so haunting and delicate. This is a pleasure to listen to and gets better with each spin.

John, I never do reviews and I'm a big fan - love your writing, your style, personal and musical - and was really looking forward to this release. I don't dislike it, but I'll be straight with you: I just didn't feel the hooks the energy or the emotional dynamic of your work with Civil Wars. The songs, although well written soulful and demonstrative of your talent, are just not as memorable.
I will buy anything you put out, I believe in you. But the body of work you created with Joy Williams stands out to me as that of the greatest duo of all time, bar none. I know you have to be sick and tired of all the "try and reconcile" talk so I won't do that here.
Love you, best of luck - but I speak for many people when I say I surely do miss the Civil Wars.

I have recently 'discovered' John Paul White from his playing/singing with Rodney Crowell on the song "It Ain't over Yet" and fell in love with his voice and guitar. I love the album and am so glad I didn't just purchase a song or two. Then I bought the Civil War albums from his previous group, but must say- he shines best when his voice is lead!

We needn't have worried about John Paul White rebounding from his artistic breakup with 'Civil Wars' collaborator Joy Williams. This is White's best solo album by far, and fully equal to any of his work with Williams. For those unfamiliar with White, his music can be described as 'Southern Gothic country folk rock' (in the words of one published review, if William Faulkner had recorded an album, this is what it would have sounded like . . . :) ).

Best CD of the year! I love JPW's music. He is an amazing song writer, guitar player, and vocalist. I did enjoy his previous band, however, this far exceeds all of his previous music. White is quite a gifted song writer---voice is great---and great guitar work.........He'll go far....Miss the Civil Wars----but prefer his solo work to his X song partner---but together they were fabulous!!! Shame they don't work together any more. Hope at some point they solve their differences and work together again----but this C.D. has some really good work on it----especially track 2. God given talent......and dedication and it shows :0

I found JPW on YouTube back when he was with The Civil Wars. Unfortunately I never got to see them perform in person. They split because of artistic differences. I didn't like Joy's new solo, but I like JPW's - it's the style that appeals to me. More Celtic/hillbilly/Appalachia influences. I look forward to more and hold hope that the duo can some day reunite to make more beautiful music.

Now I'm not a country music fan at all but occasionally music transcends being pigeon holed and this is one of them
JPW has his musical foot in many genres on this album country yes bluesy vocals yes indeed rock ballad for sure
So no not a country music fan at all but absolutely love this album not a single filler on the entire album

2013年、JohnはAlabama ShakesのサポートKeyでもあるBen Tannerらと、アラバマ州フローレンス市に「Single Lock Records」を設立しました。The Civil Warsとしてまだ活躍していた2008年にリリースしたファースト・ソロに続くこの2枚目は、そこからリリースされたもの。フローレンス市はThe Shoals“とも呼ばれ、有名なMuscle Shoalsはここにあります。

The Civil Wars解散後、Joy Williamsはもともとの路線のダンス・エレクトロの方向に行きました。果たしてJohnは･･･？　本作を聴く限り、The Civil Warsの音作りにおいて彼がなし得ていた大きさを改めて感じさせるとともに、ソロとしての違った作風も披露しています。ただ、The Civil Warsの大ファンだった僕としては、どうしても“その香りがする楽曲”に強く惹かれます。JohnのアコG1本のリフとシンプルなメロで楽曲の骨格を見事に作ってしまう1、3は、歌詞の内容とあわせて哀愁の深さがハンパない。悲しく苛烈な愛を静かに歌う6は本アルバム中イチの出来栄え。サウンド作りのイマジネーションの豊かさはほんとに素晴らしい。10も美しく、静かで穏やか。歌詞のせつなさとの対比が強いインパクトになって余韻を残します。ハード目なものとしては、イントロからカッコイイ2、ダーク＆ハードな5、が良い。

このようにレベルの高いアルバムを聴いてしまうと、多分ないのでしょうけれど、Joyが戻ってくる日を、ついつい心待ちにしてしまいます。新たなサポートVoとしてThe Secret Sistersという二人組が参加して良い仕事をしていますが、僕はどうしても･･･。

全曲がJohnの作品、歌詞付きです。あまりに切なさすぎて、愛の歌でもダウナーな気分になるものもあります。でも、常に“その先に一筋の明かりがかすかに見える”、そこがJohnの作品の魅力です。ぜひ、聴いてください。

A very classy album indeed! Of the two solo offerings since the civil wars split,this stands head and shoulders above the other and my record collection is biased to female singer songwriters.
There are some really great songs to be found here, accompanied by some outstanding arrangements and melodies.The production is flawless and suits John Paul's voice. I thought his first solo record " The long goodbye" was over produced,but worth a listen if you like his style, this second offering is an entirely different beast . Dare one say a classic.......possibly!
If you were a Civil war fan perhaps you could argue that the harmonies are missing and I wouldn't argue with you, but just put a pair of headphones on and listen to John Paul voice! well worth anybodies money
