From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Every town has a place that is shrouded in strange stories, a place that everyone avoids. In Sticks, Louisiana, that place is the swamp and no one in their right mind would think of crossing the fence to enter it. But Phineas Saucier wasn't in his right mind. He had just fought with his sister, Sterling, when he jumped the fence and ran into the swamp. Sterling anxiously awaits Phin's return, but it's not Phin who emerges from the swamp hours later. Instead, a girl named Lenora May appears and somehow slips into Sterling's family, erasing and replacing Phin's very existence. Sterling is positive she isn't crazy, but no one, not even her oldest friends, seems to remember Phin. The only person who believes her is a troubled boy named Heath. The two of them band together to send Lenora May back to the dangerous place she came from and rescue her brother. The swamp, however, has power of its own and Lenora May isn't about to return willingly. This is a creepy, atmospheric book that will draw readers in. Parker has created a supernatural setting that manages to feel new and yet strangely familiar, reminiscent of Brenna Yovanoff's work. The swamp and its magic are fully developed characters just as much as Sterling, Lenora May, and Heath. Beware the Wild breathes new life into the teen supernatural genre.—Heather Webb, Worthington Libraries, OH

"Natalie C. Parker speaks Southern Gothic fluently, from the haunting rhythm of her language to the easy cadence of her dialogue. I dare you to turn the page: the Louisiana swamp will eat you alive." (Myra McEntire, author of the HOURGLASS series)

“Creepily delicious swamp magic. I loved BEWARE THE WILD something wicked.” (Amy Plum, internationally bestselling author of the Revenant trilogy)

“Unique, haunting, and filled with characters who steal your heart, you’ll be just as intrigued by the rural, small-town world that Parker builds as you will by the magic she weaves in the dark of the wild.” (Josephine Angelini, internationally bestselling author of the Starcrossed trilogy)

“This book, much like its dark and enticing swamp, seeps into your soul. And that is a very, very good thing.” (Tara Hudson, author of the Hereafter series)

“Brimming with mystery, passion, and dark enchantments, BEWARE THE WILD is Southern Gothic at its most beguiling.” (Sonia Gensler, author of The Revenant and The Dark Between)

BEWARE THE WILD suffered from a case of "almosts" for me. The world was almost there, and I was almost attached to the romance, but unfortunately those "almosts" kept me from really connecting to this story. The world behind the story was supposed to be creepy, especially the swamp, but it just didn't quite feel like enough to really suck me in. As the blurb says, there's atmosphere, but it just wasn't fleshed out enough to really give the air I think this was trying to achieve. It's a shame, because this could have been one heck of an enthralling and chill inducing read, but it ultimately fell flat.

Another bit of disappointment for me was the characters and the romance. I had a hard time connecting with Sterling. I didn't get her behavior towards her brother, and the eating disorder to punish him for growing up. Yes, I realize he was her protector, but frankly the way she stood up and was determined to get him back once the swamp took him, seemed at odds with her previous actions that led to the whole situation in the first place. It just seemed out of character and too strong willed for the type of person she seemed to be at the beginning. That being said, I did enjoy seeing her grow and gain confidence, which kept me interested in the story. However, one thing I didn't enjoy too much was the romance between her and Heath. I just didn't quite get it as it was another one of those cases where something just seemed to be missing. I just didn't feel the chemistry nor the connection, which made it not work for me.

While BEWARE THE WILD kept me interested, it wasn't the enthralling read I was hoping for, but overall mediocre in the end. It's a shame because this one could have been great. That being said, I definitely see potential for this author and will be checking out her future books.

Swamps make stellar settings for the spookiest of stories. “The meanest swamp in Louisiana” however, disdainfully dismisses “spooky”. This arrogant, angry bog is far more frightening than the orneriest of angry alligators. A petulant presence, tinged with wicked lurks within.

Following an epic sibling squabble, Sass’s revered brother, Phin belligerently explodes from the sanctity of their backyard into the eagerly awaiting quagmire. She dreads the worst. Not “the worst” as it relates to the average, hazardous marsh. It isn’t images of the one person she loves unconditionally, who loves her right back: sinking into quicksand, being bitten by a venomous snake, hopelessly lost, slowly succumbing to the elements that plague her.

Whispered legends. Volumes of collected Swamp Stories. Knowing looks exchanged over children’s heads. The unimaginable horror that is never actually addressed, always alluded to. These fears fill her mind and freak her out. As if insulted by her tame, unimaginative worries, the glade grabs Sass by her chin, jerks her head up and shoves the unspeakable, tortuous cruelty into her stunned face.

Ms. Parker explodes into the Young Adult literary world, boldly and courageously with an authority that won’t be denied. I’m a little bit in love with her and I’m pretty sure she had me in mind with the shout out to my beloved Phish and the perfect use of a term that needs to come back: spaz attack.

Amid a tale that unapologetically reaches out and with a quick tug, pulls the reader into the sticky, steamy swamp; enters dark-skinned Abigail, the “girl who prefers girls” in a very small town. This diversity is not gratuitous nor is it the point of the story. Rather, Ms.

First of all...covergasm! This cover is on my top 2014 favorite cover list. Having a physical hardcover copy, I wish there was texture to the branches and included *swamp animals*. But still, this is gorgeous.

As a act of rebelliousness, Sterling drives her brother off the edge to point where he walks into the swamp willingly. Soon no one has seen him but hours later no one remembers him. That's because Lenora May, Sterling's supposed sister walks out of the swamp. The only person who seems to remember Phin is Sterling herself. Its up to Sterling and Heath, a boy with a broken past to find out what happened to Phin and save him. One thing is for sure, Lenora May is not Sterling's sister.

I'd have to say my biggest issue with this book was that it wasn't creepy enough. I loved the paranormal aspects and the control the swamp had over the community but the mystery regarding the swamp was dry. About a third of the way in, I already had the answer. I found the plot dragging a little towards the end but I am glad I continued because it tied up at the end.

The MC was annoying as heck and very selfish. I wanted to slap her and tell her to get a grip throughout the whole book. I never, not once felt sorry for her. I did however feel sorry for Heath, the one boy who believed her. His situation was heartbreaking. At the same time, I didnt care for the way Heath and Sterling came to believe one another. I would have liked the scene to be played more instead of instantly believing.

I would of found this creepier if Lenora May didn't have all the answers Sterling and Heath needed. I was looking forward to the two of them discovering hidden dark secrets within the community which would reveal clues on how and who to destroy to regain the swamp land.
