Well that's the scenario this author places the reader in, and she does it superbly. You feel the angst and panic, and overwhelming fear of Samantha Ryans' vulnerability in a strange world...in a strange time. But Samantha Ryan gets her priorities straight and being the level headed, strong woman she is...with fast talking, she works through the massive pickle she finds herself in.
She usually has auburn red hair...(but just had it colored bright "devil red")...can things go any worse for an accused witch in the 13th century?? One with otherworldly hair color?? Her eyes are a light, warm amber brown. Samantha is an archeologist....she's smart, a bit sassy and sometimes precocious. She's quite a beauty and is oblivious to her charms. And her only desire was to unravel an archeological mystery in modern day Scotland and find the "Crown" of Scotland....King Alexander III's crown.
He's massively huge and muscular with a bulging physique. He's commanding, compelling and controlling. He's a Laird! He has a ruthless and menacing countenance, with his long black hair and gorgeously brilliant green eyes. He's an intelligent war tactician and warrior. Laird Ian MacGregor (29) of Clan MacGregor is unwanted, unloved and not respected by his clan. He's hated and feared. And to Samantha...the one who has studied and researched Ian MacGregor in her original time, he's devastatingly handsome and totally drool worthy. But theres something mysteriously sinister living within the castle and Laird MacGregor is determined to rout it out of hiding...if he doesn't die first.
This story started off with a 5★ studded BANG especially once the foundation of Samantha's life was laid out. Once she falls back in time, the story really takes off and the author tells it so well. However (for me) the story became a bit tedious and drawn out between the seemingly never-ending hunt for whomever was trying to harm Ian and Samantha's distraction/fascination of where she actually was. A second person falls back in time along with Samantha...her coworker Jerry Callahan is separated from her once they "arrive" and I found it odd that she doesn't try to locate him. His situation was much more fearful for me to digest. His circumstances were (for me) so much more nightmarish and traumatic. She doesn't really even worry about him. Even though she doesn't like him much and they're certainly not "chums"...you'd think she'd want to find him simply because he's from the same century as she. If it were me...I'd wanna find him and latch onto him just because he's the only thing familiar. But she doesn't. The mystery of "who's trying to kill Ian" is the gist of the story intertwined with the very minor attraction between Ian and Samantha and her trying to find her way back home. The other thing is the title...Ian is supposed to be a Knight? There was nothing in the book telling us that he's been Knighted. He does not have the "Sir" title of a Knight so this was confusing.
I thought this story very worthy of 3.5★'s..but it would've been so much better if the author didn't put modern phraseology into medieval Scots conversations. "That went over well" and many other sarcastically humorous terms, etc. just wasn't a phrase 13th C. Scots would use. And the ending was wrapped up rather bluntly. I wasn't planning on reading any other books from this author only because there was no intimate/romantic moments between Ian and Samantha. No "edge"..it was all too sweet. But upon reading the excerpt of Sir Kellan Marshall She Owns the Knight...well, my curiosity is piqued. So here I go again...
I cared about these characters from the first page...found it difficult to put down, and willingly lost a great deal of sleep to read 'just one more scene'. I loved the first book in this series (SHE OWNS THE KNIGHT) so this title was one I anxiously awaited, and it *surpassed* my expectations. Definite 5 stars. It's one I'll read again.
Sensuality level: clean (and yet fiercely romantic)
Only reason I'd label this book PG is situational violence (the year is 1260 after all)...and compared to TV and movies these days, is *very mild*.
Samantha has researched for years to find the Scottish crown and she believes she has located it!unfortunately, one of her rivals has stolen her notes and is trying to beat her to it! No thanks to her boss, she manages to get there before her rival, but he arrives just as she finds it and they begin to fight over it. When both their hands are bloody, her rival puts the crown on his head--and they are send back to the 13th century!
Now they really have problems! Samantha is almost burned as a witch, but saved at the last minute by Ian. Jerry, her rival, is captured by "Mad Malcolm Campbell and forced at act as a seer.
What will happen? Ian believes she found HIS crown and won't give it back to her. Jerry can't get away from Mad Malcolm. And someone is trying to kill Ian. An very enthralling read!
