From the manufacturer
It all started with the talkie: electrical engineer Eugen Beyer started his own company in Berlin in 1924 to build cinema speakers. His Elektrotechnische Fabrik Eugen Beyer laid the foundations for a world leading manufacturer of headphones, microphones and conference systems – and for today's beyerdynamic GmbH & Co. KG.

What is a Semi Open Back Headphone ?
Our Semi Open back ear cups are ported and lined with an acoustic baffling to retain some of the acoustic energy. We are know for making some of the best closed and open back headphones in the world. The DT 880 possesses the best qualities of both.
The balanced reduction of environmental noise guarantees a perfect spherical sound, while the complete sound spectrum is reproduced in great detail from the lowest sub bass up to the highest frequencies. The higher frequencies are crystal-clear without being unpleasant and impress with a very smooth sound. The precise balanced mid frequencies are analytical and supportive, without being predominate. The bass is voluminous without being too obtrusive.
Made to Measure in Germany
The Made in Germany quality promise applies to product development and manufacture: the designs of beyerdynamic engineers and designers in Heilbronn are then built by approximately 180 highly qualified employees in Germany – mostly by hand.
All products and key technologies are developed in Germany at the company headquarters in Heilbronn. Instead of outsourcing design assignments or purchasing finished solutions from third-party manufacturers abroad, beyerdynamic retains the know-how of its personnel in-house.

run down for the DT line
The DT 770's offer bass(closed back), as expected, but its somewhat tricky to get it to come in smooth. the soundstage is pretty (cold) and these take the longest break in. i suggest make the pads super soft by squishing them flatter. this allows the driver to be closer to the ear where the lows can make a deeper impact. this also lowers the sound stage of the treble while slightly making it harsher, adding to the (coldness). I suggest EQ'ing the treb lower and raising the low mids(250-800hz) slightly.
The DT 880's! The midrange is the best with this version as it should! I listen to these with the bass turned up SLIGHTLY and the mids flat, with the low Treb boosted(4khz-15khz). Same trick with the pads unless you prefer to get the full range and dynamic soundstage these create very well. I recommend these for movies, video games, and light music listening.
The DT 990's offer the a very wide sound stage, the bass is actually quite nice. Though they also sound cold like the DT 770's surprisingly, they don't offer bass like those. These do sound the best amplified to me, as i set it flat. When i EQ the sound i constantly have to change some levels because you hear the differences between songs. That what makes these special to me,very detailed at the flattest level. I feel these would be the best for producers and sound engineers who have quiet environments. When you need to (zoom in) on particular sounds these allow you to explore the finest details, the dynamic range on these are incredible. These were the first pair of DT's i bought and i didn't realize the sounds i missed from songs. As i went back and listened to countless songs i haven't heard in a while i began to pick up keynotes and melodies i never realized were there before, like the effect of zooming in on tiny objects in pictures. That's how my ears feel with drum patterns and sound pitches in songs. These to me are the ideal set up for LIVE sound or live sound reproduction.
But to make the DT 880's the center of attention, i have to say these by far look the best, as well as behave great to all genres. Being these are the easiest to EQ without messing up any sounds details.
I highly recommend Beyerdynamic, certainly as a first high-end purchase, its a perfect "benchmark" type of headphone,a good comparison against anything you might purchase in the future as well what you previously may have had.
Check out there alternative pad styles, the soft gels make a world of difference when i comes to isolating bass, they seal the sound in. but they also make your ears slightly hot certainly on the 770's. The 880's and 990's allow air to flow in, so its not as hot.
I had tried an 880 Premium and a 990 (at a friend's studio) before buying, and the 880 sounded better, but wasn't "quite" as comfortable as the 990, which while a touch more comfortable I thought sounded terrible; both were being driven by / through an apollo mind you. For me, the 990 had boomy bass and almost shrill treble. My friend preferred the 990. (Now I wonder if his hearing is 'sound'.) Just be aware they sound very different. I do wish I could rip the earpads off a 990 and put them on the 880. But, the earpads on the 880 are very nice. Be careful, as the 880 Premium sounds very different from the 880 Pro, which costs less.
(If you don't know what the UAD Apollo's are, look into them. Off scale amazing. Thunderbolt to Mac connected, would work with a PC with Thunderbolt. You may not 'need' this, but you will 'want' it. :) )
So, a good upgrade from the 340's, works well with iPad 2 and i Phone6s, and works GREAT through the Apollo.
