That focal infections located in and around the teeth are responsible for a large number of chronic diseases has been known since the early part of the previous century. During the period 1910-1940 breakthrough research was done by Price, Rosenow and others showing how these infections can cause heart disease, arthritis, organ failure, chronic fatigue and many other ailments. While some patients obtained relief from chronic conditions by having their teeth extracted, too many ended up with few teeth and little permanent relief. With the failure to turn theory into practice, the focal infection theory fell into disrepute and was mostly forgotten for half a century. More recently, new research has again produced strong evidence for the connection between dental health and chronic disease.

This booklet describes what the author learned about these issues during the many experimental procedures that she underwent. It's not really a self help book and it does not give much advice about what to do, other than to encourage the reader to find a competent dental surgeon. It touches on many controversial issues "beyond amalgam", including extractions, root canals, infection, materials, incompatible metals, wisdom teeth, nutrition &c. while centering on the main issue in this book, namely cavitations. Cavitations are areas of osteonecrosis or osteomyelitis, basically rotten bone, in the lower and upper jaw which can harbor infections. Some of the information in this book should be described as tentative, experimental or even speculative, but the author makes no distinction between more and less well established facts, nor does she support her statements with references or studies.

Thank goodness for this stand alone book! I work in a dental office and find conventional sources offer nothing but disinformation regarding the darker side of dentistry. "Beyond Amalgam" explores issues that most dentists blissfully ignore and dental associations actively suppress. But then, I guess that's to be expected. After all, we are in the business of selling a standardized 'happy smile' not revealing the connection between dental health and whole body health!

If you're happy with ADA misinformation, this book is not for you! If you believe drillin' and fillin' rightly belongs at the center of holistic dentistry, you may not enjoy this book quite as much as I did.

Mainstream dentistry won't be addressing the unpleasant truths tackled in Beyond Amalgam regarding jawbone "cavitation" and its effects on systemic health any time soon. So, if you do read this book you'll run the risk of winding up too far ahead of the curve. Your dentist may not even like you anymore!

This book is particularly dangerous to the health care professional--proceed with extreme caution! With this info you may find yourself even more persona non grata than those pesky critics of wholesale fluoridation!

Stockton's personal experience within this new dimension of dentistry and disease etiology and her straight forward style of reporting makes this book a jawbuster--it should be a Blockbuster. But, somehow, I don't think the powers that be are going to be very supportive, heheh.
