This is the story of how Justin T. Miller, an American Vanderbilt undergraduate student, met Duncan Kimani Kamau and Cornel Onyango Nyaywera, two men who had grown up witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS in their own communities in Kenya. Though Kamau and Nyaywera grew up in opposite ends of the country and came from opposing tribes, they overcame prejudice and cultural expectations to bring healing to their communities. With Miller's help, their dream of empowering people to live a life beyond AIDS became a reality.
Once Kamau, Miller, and Nyaywera realized their common purpose, CARE for AIDS was born. But it was only the beginning of their fight against AIDS, as they quickly discovered the fear and stigma that blanketed the disease. If their fledgling nonprofit was going to empower anyone, they would need help--and they found it, one local church at a time. As they slowly but steadily grew their network of friends and allies, Kamau, Miller, and Nyaywera discovered that the most complex problems can be solved through intentional, redemptive relationships.

About the Author

Cornel Onyango Nyaywera:
Cornel is a pastor, husband, and father. He has served as an East African Director for CARE for AIDS, since he co-founded the organization in 2007. Cornel grew up in the Western part of Kenya near Lake Victoria, where his passion for justice and inclusivity led him to engage in the HIV crisis that was destroying his community. Cornel and his wife now live and serve in Nairobi, Kenya. They have five children: Bryan, Justin, Sherry, Collins, and Cornel, Jr.

Duncan Kimani Kamau:
Duncan grew up on a coffee farm in Central Kenya. As the son of a pastor, Duncan has always felt a calling to compassion and pastoral care, which eventually led him to service in the face of the AIDS crisis, which he did by activating local churches to care for the most marginalized members of their communities. Duncan serves as a co-founder and East African Director of CARE for AIDS in Nairobi, Kenya. He and his wife Rose live with their three biological children, Keith, Abigail, and Anna, in addition to their seven adopted boys.

Justin T. Miller:
Justin grew up in Fayetteville, GA and has spent the past decade working with the heart of an entrepreneur to solve one of the world's most complex social problems. As the co-founder and CEO of CARE for AIDS, he has dedicated his life and leadership to empowering people throughout East Africa to live a life beyond AIDS. Justin's home base is Atlanta, GA, where he heads the U.S. office of CARE for AIDS. Justin and his wife, Lindsay, have two beautiful children, Addie and Logan.

I loved this book! Beyond Blood shares the story of three men (two African and one American) and their journey founding CARE for AIDS. With unique backgrounds/stories and multiple differences to overcome, God brought them together in a beautiful way and used them to touch each other's lives as well as thousands of lives in Kenya impacted by HIV. The passion they show and their willingness to step out and act is truly inspiring. Reading their individual stories, in their own words felt like sitting around the dinner table with each of them. The HIV epidemic is something we don't talk enough about. This book is enlightening on many levels and is a great tool to help educate and start a conversation.

Once I picked up this book Beyond Blood, I couldn't put it down. This is an incredible and fascinating story that draws you into the three authors' lives. Its hard for a westerner to imagine what Duncan and Cornel had to overcome growing up in their villages, the obstacles they had to overcome, then their personal connections to HIV/AIDS. Such an inspirational story of how these three men (and others) follow the call on their lives and literally save thousands of peoples lives. They and the organization they built is a testament to what man is capable in caring for their fellowman.
