Yes, "Brokeback Mountain" happened to be Hollywood's first bona fide, well-made and commercially successful "gay weepie". But for many it is so much more; there exists something transcendent and deeply felt in the story of Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist.
In "Beyond Brokeback: The Impact of a Film," journalist Dave Cullen and the members of an online forum have fashioned together a valuable and illuminating collection that proves testament to the very impact "Brokeback" had on so many lives. This anthology of intensely personal stories, selected from contributions to the forum, offer illuminating commentary on the impact of Annie Proulx's unforgettable story and Ang Lee's landmark film. The deeply personal approach speaks to fans of the film and story alike. And in doing so, further exposes the poison of "the closet," as well as its destructive, far-reaching effects on society as a whole.
These stories of regret, loneliness, sexual conformity and hidden truths harbored are intensely personal, and do perhaps more to sting your heart. They feature their own distinct experiences, views, and voices and are impossible to shake. While some prove deeply uplifting, in others there lies a sense of hopelessness that leaves scars. We come to see what many have withstood and what they have given up and it is inescapably heartbreaking. These voices tangibly remind us, through stories of real life hardships and life altering reactions, that both literature and film can reverberate our own emotional struggles through art. "Beyond Brokeback" is sheer testament to it.
The stories are interesting and some are very moving.
I urge anyone who is thinking about purchasing this wonderful and powerful book to do so.
It is amazing what an impact a movie can have on so many people from different walks of life.
I can only think of one: Brokeback Mountain. This book attests to the power of the movie. The authors are intelligent, articulate and thoughtful, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and straight, male and female. They range in age from 19 to 70, and come from places as diverse as Finland and Turkey, as well as most of the United States. It's beautifully designed and produced almost entirely by volunteers.
If you wondered what all the fuss was about in 2006 when this film won just about every Best Picture award going except for the Oscar, or doubt that any movie could have an enormous personal impact on a wide audience, read the book. Your life just might be changed, too.
Here we find not only a moving and personally rewarding text which presents edited versions of the most impactful web contributions, but also there is a sense of political connectivity which transcends the ephemeral nature of web forums.
This text provides a connectivity which traces personal responses to the film; at the same way it is a pathway to understanding - which is therapeutic.
Through revealing stories of identification, inspiration and intimacy, alongside those of rejection, isolation and loss, Beyond Brokeback challenges stereotypical ideas as to the extents and depths of homosexual lives.
Most importantly, Beyond Brokeback provides a real sense of an "inclusive" gay and lesbian community - which seems denied to many living in isolation.
