"Balance is key to Beyond CASABLANCA. Using the common dividing line of 1959 as the end of the "Classic Era," Garlen's selections offer a deft cross-section of mainstream American filmmaking, encompassing all genres, significant directors and iconic stars, while avoiding the "over-hyped duds" we all know and nap through (I'm looking at you, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS)." - Will McKinley, Cinematically Insane
From the Author
This book was written to help movie lovers find more classic films worth watching. I hope you'll enjoy reading it, but even more I hope you will discover new movies that amuse, inform, and inspire you in unexpected ways. I don't promise that you'll love every movie included in Beyond Casablanca, but each of the selected films has its merits and admirers. It's a great privilege to be able to share them with readers.

Well, it turns out that I was wrong and had a poor misconception of Classic movie quality based upon my childhood experience staying home sick from school watching old crummy black and white movies that I wished were cartoons instead. Yes, I am old enough to remember when kids only got to watch cartoons on Saturday morning.
Anyway, I met this author in my adult LEGO group, and she was really super cool, liked the same sci fi shows I do, etc. She told me she wrote a guide book to classic movies. She really seemed to know what she was talking about, and I thought to myself that if she likes so many of the things I like, and she also likes old classic movies that I think I hate, then perhaps I could be wrong about those old boring movies.
So I bought her book and started watching these movies, and what do you know? Hey Mikey! He likes them! The boy who hated those old movies has grown up, found an awesome guidebook, and discovered he really does like some of these old classic movies. We have even bought another copy as a Christmas present for my wife's dad.
Long story short : if you or someone you love hates those boring old classic movies, this is the classic movie guide for you! It might change your mind and open up a world of classic entertainment you've been missing out on.
If you like movies - regardless of the genre you prefer - you ought to have this book as a reference. I know I've already updated my Netflix queue!
I won an advance readers edition on Goodreads.
