Editorial Reviews

Review

While the ICD-10 transition is a massive project, the greater detail and accuracy required of clinical documentation brings tremendous opportunity to use that data to improve the quality and cost of care we provide. Beyond Coding is a great resource to guide the transformation, and we have to begin now. --Bill Spooner, Chief Information Officer, Sharp HealthCare

This book empowers healthcare leaders to change the focus of the ICD-10 conversation from executing a software change and coding strategy to arguing for a disciplined methodology in improving clinical documentation and quality of care, and for alignment with high-level EHR adoption and evidence-based medicine. The entire healthcare enterprise will have no choice but to get on board! --David A. Beuther, Director of Medical Informatics, National Jewish Health

ICD-10 is a significant organizational challenge. Though benefits will be realized in the long-term, the impact ICD-10 will have on the entire organization cannot be underestimated. This book provides critical guidance to healthcare leaders as they navigate the challenges of improving clinical documentation. Now is the time to develop and execute a plan for adoption. --Jill A. Truitt, Chief Information Officer, UT Medical Group

I read this book as soon as it came out, and was struck by the balanced approach to this topic. There is a lot to do to transform an organization to using ICD-10 coding appropriately. Yes, there is the technical side - and that is where the lion share of the focus seems to be. I was involved with such a project just before this book was published in a large Health Insurance plan. I also implemented an care management application in Europe, and two other continents using ICD-10. So... I have a little experience here. Even though, I wish I had this book to pass around to the key stakeholders! Beyond Coding details a rational approach to thinking about the bevy of ramifications to the "new world" of ICD-10 to people who are needing to understand the thought process.

Thank you to the authors for laying this out for us - it will be immensely helpful in my next project.

I loved this book! The authors have provided a valuable roadmap to ensuring the entire healthcare organization is well prepared for the ICD-10 adoption challenge. Transition to ICD-10 is a technical challenge but an even larger organization and leadership challenge. As they point out, the costs of this transition are large, but they are short-term. The benefits can be huge and will certainly be long-term. Careful planning now will help ensure your organization is able to reap those benefits. Thank you for writing this book.

As a management consultant, I’ve worked with companies undergoing dramatic shifts in how they operate. Organizational change is always difficult because it requires modifying attitudes, culture, and habits. The authors clearly understand the enormous challenges healthcare leaders face with implementing ICD-10. They make a compelling case for adjusting one’s perspective from simply complying with a mandate to seizing this opportunity for improving quality of care while still achieving financial goals. These combine for a powerful competitive advantage in the healthcare delivery marketplace. To help executives realize the benefits of full ICD-10 adoption, the authors present a roadmap based on behavioral research and proven results shown when their methodology was applied to EMR adoption. They offer concrete approaches for removing barriers, particularly those related to providers who now have a very different role in the coding process. This book guides healthcare leaders through the process of fully engaging department and physician leaders, gaining support, and developing proficiency to achieve the greatest results from ICD-10 implementation.

The authors of Beyond Coding address a crucial topic in healthcare at the precise moment a comprehensive discussion needs to take place. Sensible, compelling healthcare initiatives often stagnate in the massive bureaucracy of large systems; many that have a responsibility to their shareholders to earn profits in the near-term. Beyond Coding and other thoughtful publications will elevate the discussion by providing tools and arguments to champion a long-term perspective to improving our healthcare system. The key message through the entire book is clear and spot on: take action now and here's how.

As an advisor to the healthcare industry, I’m pleased to have found a concise (two hour read) roadmap for ICD-10 adoption. Implementation is important, but the most important initiatives will focus on early adoption and efficient use within a given workflow. This book, often with succinct bullet points, sketches the key elements of a successful strategy. I believe my clients can use these points as a basis for their internal ICD-10 planning. The scope of recent healthcare mandates and challenges is daunting; resources such as Beyond Coding will be instrumental in achieving successful outcomes.

Beyond Coding offers a pragmatic playbook for healthcare professionals dealing with ICD-10 -- particularly providers. I found the book appropriately technical but, importantly, it also provided an inspirational vision and roadmap to aid leaders of healthcare organizations through the transition. The book was refreshing because it offered research and focus group based views along with corresponding leadership tips.

If you are looking for a practical, action-oriented guide on the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, check out Beyond Coding.
