This is absolutely my favorite album of 2013. Buy it, stream it, or check them out live in concert. Either way, you are guaranteed a musical experience that will keep you coming back for more. I had the opportunity of meeting Chris, the singer, at one of their recent shows. Not only is he an exceptional singer, but his artwork is outstanding. His artwork can be found on the t-shirts, posters, and booklets that are for sale. When I spoke with Chris, I could tell that he was very passionate about his music and artwork. I can definitely see this band (or atleast the singer) blowing up the music scene over the next few months.

It was a dark and stormy night. Two musicians were held up in a house, trapped there due to the fearsome weather outside. These two musicians, both members of the guitar-centric band Delicate Steve, decided to make the best of it and write some songs together. Two or three days later, they had seven new songs and a new band: Saint Rich. And blam! Their debut album, Beyond The Drone is already half-done. The storm was probably over by then too, but I’m not sure.

The most interesting point of this origin story is that these two musicians, Christian Peslak and Steve Marion, are already in a band together – so why would they want to create a new side-project1? The interesting twist is that Steve Marion, who is the titular Steve of Delicate Steve, takes more of a backseat on Saint Rich. Instead of stealing the show with his electric guitar, he’s behind the drum kit. Peslak, on the other hand, gets a chance in the spotlight with his guitar and vocals. These songs definitely don’t sound like anything from Delicate Steve — Beyond The Drone steers away from any real experimentation in favor for Americana-flavored indie rock. There’s a country twang to Peslak’s voice that, if you’re into that kind of thing, ain’t bad, and he’s more than capable with a guitar in his hand.

Beyond The Drone is lost in a weird nether region where it’s a little too jittery2 for folks expecting roots rock, and too rootsy/conventional for those looking for experimental indie rock (e.g., the Delicate Steve crowd). The best moments on this album arise when Saint Rich keeps it simple: a song like “Black and Brown” works because it’s tasteful and doesn’t stretch itself beyond its working limits. On the other hand, when the band attempts to write a catchy, radio-friendly song, it’s disastrous.

How are bands like this and a thousand others able to come up with a recording contract
and subsequent release? It's truly mind boggling.
