Anne, daughter of Pastor Adam and Maurene Wells watches her father's every breath whose life depends on a ventilator machine.Adam was in his element as a preacher. His profession, his calling, led him and his family from California to Leonard, Texas to a dying church. The Well's family traveled from place to place frequently and Anne always had a hard time fitting in as the new kid in school. The plan by the town council and Adam was to display a wooden nativity scene for all to enjoy, not being aware of the complications that arose from their actions. A family torn, trying desparately to hold themselves together, a devastating secret, and yet beyond their world, in the darkened sky, lies the farthest star.

Highly entertaining, I enjoyed every minute spent getting to know these realistic and well developed characters. This book drew me in from the beginning and held my attention throughout. This novel offers everything a reader could want heartbreak, suspense and romance. Dialogue, scenery and plot worked well with no dull parts. The overall message is inspiring and I was challenged in my faith. I would recommend this well written novel to others. Thank you to Zondervan Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC for my review

Beyond the Farthest Star: A Novel
Beyond The Farthest Star is the latest release from the prolific, multi-award winning team of Bodie and Brock Thoene. Known primarily for their carefully researched historical fiction, they have proven they are equally skilled in a contemporary setting. Based on the original screenplay by Andrew Librizzi, Beyond The Farthest Star is an insightful, mesmerizing story that centers on the Wells family. Adam, Maureen, and their teenaged daughter, Anne, are each struggling with internal demons that are destroying their family. Once a world-renowned preacher, this move to the small town of Leonard, Texas, is Adam's last hope of restoring his dream of living up to the approval he craves, but instead brings mounting tensions, revealed secrets, and an unexpected confrontation that leads to the ultimate sacrifice.

From the beginning, I was able to "get into the skin" of each character in the book and understand a bit of what he or she was feeling. The conflict between people and their inner turmoil jumps off the page in a way that has tremendous impact. The entire book is filled with universal themes that speak to all people and effectively weaves the idea that there is hope in spite of physical or emotional scars. The humanity of each person is revealed in a way which is a fresh and unique with genuine, even raw emotions. Ultimately this is a richly layered story with an honest portrayal of transformation and restoration. However, there is so much more, and it is hard to pinpoint just one aspect. BTFS is an amazing story that will hold the interest of those who like a variety of genres.

I was definitely rivetted by this book and read it in one reading. I did for a bit have second thoughts as it did seem very melodramatic, but reflecting on it, this was one of the best Christian novels I've read.

Others have given the general plot, so I'll just mention that it is about a minister who had great promise of being another Billy Graham but failed the promise and is now starting a position in a small Texas town. His wife, a romantic novel addict, has her own secrets and their daughter Anne is exhibiting goth influence.

A politician has targetted a church nativity scene as an issue to heighten his popularity and he obviously is the chief villain. There are other issues and the combination of characters and motivations keep the story going at a rapid pace.

This is a spiritual novel and quotes from G. K. Chesterton, Mother Theresa, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Helen Keller set the tone at the start of each part of the book.

The authors did write this from the screenplay of the forthcoming movie and I am definitely looking forward to seeing it although it probably will be in very limited release.

One must read this book. I could relate to the daughter and her depressed state and can see that there is hope for all of us when we look for God in our hearts and not our voice. Speaking the words is not the same as loving with our hearts.

I've been a huge fan of Brock & Bodie Thoene's historical fiction for years. The Zion Covenant, Zion Chronicles, Zion Legacy, Galway Chronicles, and Shiloh Legacy series of historical fiction were excellent, and I've recommended them to many. But I don't understand what happened to the high caliber of the Thoenes' writing when they wrote Beyond the Farthest Star. The writing in this book is so far beneath the complex and gripping plots, the depth of historical and time-period elements woven into the plots, and the very well-developed characters of their other books. This book was difficult to push my way through, rather than being difficult to put down as their other books have been. Beyond the Farthest Star seemed like teen fiction to me, although I hadn't seen it advertised as written for a teen market. I was very disappointed by the shallowness of the plot and the characters (none of whom would I miss after finishing the book, although I always felt as if I were leaving old friends when I reached the ends of their other series) and by the cliche and unsubstantial writing. I still love the Thoenes' writing, and I'm sure I'll go back and re-read the series I mentioned above that I own and love. I hope the Thoenes will return to that quality and depth of writing in future books.
