The cast of characters was so cool to me. I thought everyone played their parts well, the straight brother, who didn't overplay his part. The goofy brother's actions were spot on throughout, his facial movements were awesome. The Creep was creepy. The dumb cop was not overplayed either, he kept within himself and did not try to steal scenes. I loved the Maiden and her Ambien sex! And the Strange eighties dude! I loved his voice! The gamekeeper was played to a T, and her voice was great too. The cast and the fun feel to the movie put it in the five star category for me. I do not give many. Enjoy!!

I like the idea/concept, and I love the art, the game board design, and the opening credits/music. That said, I think budget was a HUGE constraint. I finally got around to watching this, and I did enjoy it, but I would have loved to see more of the "Other" world. That world so artfully designed on the front cover - we don't get to see that.

The pacing might be an issue for some people (very slow, lots and lots of dialogue - things only pick up halfway through). The effects that we did see were great though, and I think overall this is a nice homage to a bygone era, even if it isn't "perfect." I look forward to seeing more from this director.

UPDATE: I've rewatched the film and changed my 3-star rating to a 4. I think there really was a lot of thought put into the film, but there were constraints nonetheless. As I mentioned before, I would have loved to see more of The Other Side.

I do recommend others to give this one a go, it does start out a little dry but will draw you into the game as well in a short time.

This is a fun tribute to the VHS and VHS Board game era. This is a good movie with good production value and some great "olde timely" practical/gore effects that you unfortunately don't see much of anymore. If you have fond memories of grewing up when you could ride your bike to the independent video store and rent whatever random horror tape you could find on the shelves the this should be MUST WATCH.

There are slow movies and then there are SLOOOOOWWW movies. I thought this movie was going to be a sorta "horror Jumanji" where the old VHS game kills people in real life or something like that. Maybe that IS what this is supposed to be, I don't know because it was so glacially paced and irritatingly boring that I couldn't be bothered to finish it. I understand that sometimes there isn't a budget for special effects and monster makeup but that doesn't mean you should have literally NOTHING happen in the first like thirty to forty minutes of run time. I feel like I could in fact actually make a better film than this and I have no experience in Hollywood. I imagine most of the positive reviews for this have to be either friends and family of the makers or paid for from one of those content farms because I definitely don't see how anyone is rating this 5 stars.

Gordon and John's father owned a video shop for many years but seven months ago he mysteriously disappeared. Now he is presumed dead and Gordon and John reluctantly meet at the shop to box up the contents and sell the premises. But after they find an old VHS game called 'Beyond the Gates' and start playing it, everything changes.

If you've read the box art you'll know this is a horror film shot with a touch of 80's style (and certainly with an 80's soundtrack). There is quite a lot of time spent introducing the characters and explaining their relationships, building interest in their characters. The three lead actors are all quite likeable and the two brothers have a troubled past, the issues between them which are unfolded as things progress. The story is a bit of fun as the VHS game draws them in and traps them, and there is a bit of blood and gore shown from fairly early on. It's fairly easy to work out what is going to happen in the end but it's all very entertaining.

The disk sports a surprisingly good Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track which is very clear and makes great use of the surround channels.

Very short, at 70 minutes, but this is just right for the amount of material presented.

PLOT...
Two estranged brothers reunite at their missing father's video store to liquidate the property and sell off his assets. As they dig through the store, they find a VCR board game dubbed 'Beyond The Gates' that holds a connection to their father's disappearance and deadly consequences for anyone who plays it.

For a small budget movie this is a very entertaining horror and quite original in some ways, the story has a good cheesy 80's vibe to it with a pretty decent cast, some bloody practical gore effects, the coolest part of the movie is Scream queen Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator 1985, Chopping Mall 1986, From Beyond 1986 and many more) even though her role is very small she is great and plays her role very creepily. This is good old skool fun worth a night in with popcorn if you can pick it up cheap, recommended horror. (not to be taken seriously though)

DVD has no features which is a shame (no UK Blu-ray either)

A fun premise and a great homage to 80s horror movies. There are plenty of plot holes, and at times it feels like an anthology episode stretched to near-feature-length (79 minutes), but that all adds to the retro feel. Acting is mostly understated and naturalistic, the film is (over-)lit in blue and neon pink, special effects are used sparingly, and tension builds effectively to a rollercoaster finish. This film is almost the antithesis of modern found-footage horror. Barbara Crampton ("Evelyn", the VHS game narrator) chews the scenery, and looks to be having great fun with the role.
