About the Author
Marty Dutcher began working with young children at age twenty-four, just after four years of study, including three years at the University of Maryland, and part- and full-time work for NASA in computer science and programming. Marty spent his next 12 years of working with children in Amazing Life Games, a community preschool program in Washington, D.C. He started as an assistant teacher, moved on to being a lead teacher, a co-director of the preschool, and later founded and taught in a small private K-2 school (with full-time classroom responsibilities). During this time period he was trained in improvisational theater (specifically for working with three-to-five year olds), studied educational philosophies, and "invented" many kinds of learning opportunities that kept his students engaged in learning and expressing themselves both socially and artistically. From 1984 through 1997, Marty worked with a group of Washington educators, opening a local network of high quality educational child care centers. Marty trained staff, designed learning curricula, and worked with parents (under the guidance of the president of the company, a trained and experienced family therapist). His favorite place, however, was always in the classroom, no matter the age of the students. It is where the challenge and the satisfaction of creating opportunities for every kind of learning always happened. Retiring from child care field in 2003, Marty began designing a parenting workshop, an idea he had ten years earlier. As he engaged in this process, he developed the same appreciation for parents that he had with children. He also continued his study of children and learning, integrating the latest in human evolutionary-neurological and socio-linguistic development into his work. Marty's workshop developed into this, his first book, Beyond Good Parenting: The Art & Science of Learning, Behavior, and Partnership. Marty's passion and enthusiasm for what is possible has made his workshops challenging, very engaging, and instantly valuable. Marty is also an accomplished musician, has raised two wonderful daughters with his wife, Carolyn, a retired certified nurse midwife, and now lives in Lancaster, PA.
