Beyond the Mask is an Atlas-Fiction anthology themed around what happens to super-heroes when the not being, well, super-heroes. From nursing homes to betrayals and more, this anthology runs the gamut of what happens in the ordinary lives of super-heroes.
First, I appreciate anthologies because I love getting to check out multiple authors without reading thousands of pages. Not that I won’t read that many pages, but I get those little tastes first. The distinct styles are fun to explore, as are the ways the authors cram a lot of story into one small piece each.
One story I got a kick out of in this anthology was S.P.A. It this story about a bunch of super-heroes in a self-help style support group called Super-Powereds Anonymous. Then, despite all the best intentions of the group, things go awry, and they must trust perhaps the least trustworthy member of the group to help them fix things. The characters were awesome in this, as was the excellent feeling of the support group atmosphere.
Persimmon was another one that stuck out to me. The angst that Persimmon experiences, the family dynamics, and the tension throughout the story built in wonderful ways with an excellent sense of realism.
Honestly, I loved all the stories in the book. It was clear every author had put a lot of thought into what super-heroes are doing around those moments where it’s time to save the world.
I think the only criticism I have of the anthology is that there were a few editing issues. By no means was it enough to detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. Just enough for me to see them and notice.
In the end, I recommend this anthology. Lots of wonderful stories and you’re supporting a good cause. Which is something else I appreciated as a reader, the book explains the charity to which the proceeds go and what they do. Definitely worth it.

As anthologies go, this wasn't bad. I love a good superhero story, and the fact that proceeds from this anthology were going toward charity, I thought, why not? I don't regret the decision, but I admit, I felt the stories were a bit of a mixed bag. While I wouldn't go as far as to say they were bad, I felt that some weren't exactly what I'd call a story, but more of a character study. There were a couple that I found a little odd/confusing, but again, nothing worth throwing the full collection away for. Despite some struggle on my part to connect with the book, I found the following stories to be excellent:
Turncoat by C.L. Cannon
S.P.A. by Sarah Buhrman
Lady Blackwing by Devorah Fox
Let There Be Peace by Bob James
If you like superheroes, especially not your typical superheroes, check this anthology out, and revel in a good read with good impact. :)

I bought this book because the proceeds were going to a great cause, but dove into it out of curiosity.
As a fan of the superhero genre from my early childhood, I enjoyed the progression from over-the-top heroics to the more personal stories of more recent times.
It’s in this spirit that I ventured into this book, with hope, and I wasn’t disappointed. There are ten stories within the pages, and each of them is very different from the others. Even more amazingly, they’re all very personal stories and bring a lot of different characters and realities into the mix.
Go behind the mask, and see just what it takes to be a hero in the open...

This is a good collection with the basic theme that not all super heroes are created equal, but they have a goal to do good. This is a great way to get a sneak peek at the writing styles of several authors and enjoy some tales along the way. Most of the stories in this collection feel like they could belong to a continuing series and I found each author did a great job showing readers why they might want to grab more stories by them. All in all I'd say this is a good one to grab and I love that the money for the sales goes to a special charity.

Who doesn't love a good superhero tale? With this anthology, you get to meet plenty of characters who are deemed heroes in their own right and certainly rise to the occasion when need be. While I did like how several authors were included, now I want to read more about these heroes!
