Velda Brotherton is a master of creating interesting and believable characters, whether she is writing a historical tale or a modern-day story of struggle and romance such as this.
Though this is a big book, it doesn't feel long because you're caught up in the story. Brotherton's storytelling and character development skills set her high above many better known authors.
This is a deep and beautiful story, full of rage, torment, love, fear, and life-changing decisions.

Glen Tanner returns to family members who have reconciled themselves to his absence and have moved on with their lives. He feels totally abandoned.
Newly widowed Katherine Kelly, however, meets and identifies with Glen’s desolation. Together, Glen and Katie struggle to find “a home” in and with one another.
With occasional glimpses of hope, the book guides a reader through the torment these two battle as they assist each other on the torturous paths to mutual recovery.
BEYOND THE MOON is the darkest of Brotherton’s novels, a new M.O. for this well-loved writer of non-fiction and historical romances.
I believe this is Velda Brotherton's Opus!
As I was reading about Kate and Glen, I thought about the many women who take care of wounded warriors. That's true love. And Velda has truly written a fascinating love story.
