Beyond The E-Myth embraces the fundamental premise of that first book--that a small business only succeeds to the degree its owner goes to work ON the business rather than just IN it, creating the systemic Operating System that makes that business unique in the marketplace.

Beyond The E-Myth expands that conversation with the entrepreneurial small business owner, in a clear, precise, and compelling overview that addresses their main job--inventing, building, and launching a company with the power to "scale"--to grow beyond the "Company of One" in a straightforward, eight-step process.

When asked, Gerber emphatically explains: "I wrote this to make the job of building a small business easy--for every man or woman struggling to get it right. This book cuts to the chase: A company is a product to be sold. Build it right, and you will sell it. Build it wrong, and you won't. Most small business owners won't. This book was written to fix that."

Wow... very inspiring, very enlightening for any serious entrepreneur.“Leave behind your well-trod excuse for being far less than you could be,” Michael Gerber challenges us.Indeed, he has given an enormous roadmap to follow for taking your business "from 1 to 1,000" and turning it into an enterprise. These are not only fascinating structural concepts, but indeed, actionable things for us to do in order to make our business extraordinary. This is a book you'll not be able to put down, and will not forget... if you're wise.I highly recommend this for all entrepreneurs, great and small.-Donna Merrill

Book review
Dr. Steve Kornfeld, DVM, CPCC

In his book, “Beyond the E-Myth”, author Michael Gerber brings to bare his 40 years of helping small business owners shift from being technicians to becoming true business owners, even entrepreneurs.

As a “Gerber-file”, who has read all his books, and as someone who has witnessed the true meaning of being technician-owners in my profession, veterinary medicine, I can sympathize with Michael’s frustrations over the years. Most small business owners would rather be technicians, their comfort zone, and let everything else take care of their business.

That’s why I like Michael’s teaching and that’s why I feel this book speaks to me. Michael literally pours 40 years of wisdom into this book. Although thin in pages, this book is thick with powerful messages on how to attain the greater purpose of a business—its legacy. I think herein lies the biggest difference between business owners and technicians. I love how in this book, Michael builds the story of reaching out for the legacy from the ground up. I had to read the book twice to be able to capture the many pearls hidden in it.

So pay attention and learn.

Chris McCluskey here using my wife's account. As a serial entrepreneur I have read and taught Gerber's works for years and have developed a professional friendship with Michael via distance. I have interviewed him twice on my podcast.

For those familiar with 'The E-Myth Revisited", be aware that you will miss the literary device of the author's conversations with Sarah about her pie shop. This is a much more straight-forward book, but you will still find Michael's characteristic 'splitting' of our personhood into distinct selves. This time he's not examining our entire personhood as small business owners -- splitting them into the 'entrepreneur', the 'manager', and the 'technician' -- but instead he drills deeply on ONLY the 'entrepreneur'. This book is a mashup between his 2008 work, "Awakening the Entrepreneur Within" and his live 3-day vision-casting workshops he calls "Dreaming Rooms". I participated in one of those Dreaming Rooms in 2013.

One of his primary contentions is that most people who appear to have succeeded in launching and growing small businesses have not, in fact, built 'businesses' or 'enterprises' but rather simply 'jobs' for themselves. Having followed the advice in his earlier works to work both ON as well as IN their businesses, he finds that they are still working IN their businesses years and years later. If they were to quit working, their businesses would die. They are still directly tied to their businesses -- they ARE their businesses; their businesses ARE them. Even if they are systematized and well-run, they are still 'jobs'. There's no escaping them. Ever.

That kind of small business is what Gerber refers to as "a company of one", and the subtitle of this new book communicates (metaphorically if not literally) the radical conversion he hopes to bring: "The evolution of an enterprise from a company of one to a company of 1,000." He intends to expand the role of the 'entrepreneur' within each small business owner to such a degree that he or she develops a business that no longer needs them -- it's been built to scale, and with that scaling comes the potential for selling it.

Just as in "The E-Myth Revisited" Gerber urged readers to adopt a mindset of building their small businesses as if they were going to franchise them (whether or not they actually desired to do so) because that would force them to systematize to such a degree that they would run efficiently, in "Beyond the E-Myth" he urges readers to adopt a mindset of growing those businesses as if they were going to sell them (whether or not they actually desire to do so) because that will force them to create something that doesn't require them at all in order to run efficiently.

The key, he argues, is focusing on our 'entrepreneur' self and splitting it into four distinct parts -- the Dreamer, the Thinker, the Story-Teller, and the Leader -- doing deep work on the primary tasks of each of those roles. As with various portions of Gerber's other writings, I find myself having to go back and re-read sections again and again to grasp the magnitude as well as the import of what he has written, but I do resonate with his message. Having built four successful businesses and two successful 501c3 non-profits, I can claim some small degree of mastery of parts of "The E-Myth Revisited", but I am a far cry from mastering the challenge of scaling something to the point that it no longer needs me.

If you have beaten the odds of small business failure by creating a successful venture but find yourself still tied to its day-to-day operations, this book is for you. Prepare to be challenged, prepare to be confused, prepare for more than one reading, but also prepare to scale. As Michael Gerber says, "No scale, no sale." Join me in working ourselves out of the jobs we've created for ourselves.

This is a great supplement for the other E-Myth books. Since I've read the others, I really enjoyed this one. If someone is just starting the series, I'd suggest starting with one of the earlier books.

Michael Gerber's The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It is a seminal business book I recommend frequently to coaching clients and in the educational programs I teach.

Now, he’s brought us Beyond the E-Myth: The Evolution of an Enterprise, which synthesizes the E-Myth concepts and ties them together with a process we can use to create high-value, high-functioning, and life-fulfilling businesses.

It starts with a mindset shift which Michael explains fully in the early pages of the book. From there, he spells out how to approach your business structure and and how to grow it over time.

The Turnkey Practices and Turnkey Management concepts are worth the price of the book alone.

If you’re ready to scale your business beyond your wildest dreams, get Beyond the E-Myth and get started.

I need to agree with the other readers who gave this book a low rating. I too am a fan of the original E-myth but this book was a letdown. It has been written in a form of a long-form sales letter, trying to build up anticipation but at some point you realize that you've read most of the book with little substance. I was expecting a book on practical advice on how to implement the concepts laid out in the E-myth, but instead I got a motivational speech on how one day your firm could employ 1000 people.

Possibly motivational for some. I’m probably not the target audience. As a small business owner and advisor, I would have appreciated more “how to achieve” than the broad concepts offered in this book.
Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2016
This is a brilliant and natural extension of Michael's great work on making your company scalable so that you can work "On" it instead of "In." Looking at your business as if you were to franchise it and also through the mind and filter of people who will eventually buy it takes your scalable thinking to another level.
I can't recommend Michael's books highly enough if you want to turn a business that requires and keeps you prison to run into something that can be run successfully by others.
It's not an easy step at first, but once you get locked in, you're only regret will be having not done it sooner.

I am a great fan of Michael E. Gerber. I've worked with him and have seen how his classic E-Myth has transformed entrepreneurs to work on their business, not in it. I think I must have given away over 500 copies of that book to my business accelerator clients over the past 20 years.

As Michael said when Beyond the E-Myth was released it's his last book on the topic. (I think there are more books in him). Beyond the E-Myth is an 8 step approach to building a company with the eventual goal to sell it. You must love Gerber's approach to a topic he knows so well when your first book is rated a classic by the NYTimes everything in the series is destined to be great.

Michael talks to you in a practical no-nonsense way that everyone will find useful. In the manner that the E-Myth transformed the way entrepreneurs looked at growing the business this book is about setting it up from the beginning to be more than the Company of One

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to scale your business - read this first
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2016
The Key Structure of Beyond the E-Myth
Part 1 is all about establishing the idea for your business – drilled into 4 statements the Dream, Vision, Purpose, and Mission – each of which has a key role to play in the following parts.
Part 2 is about building your franchise prototype (and you don’t have to be building a franchise – it’s the theory that counts). Your Client Fulfilment System.
Part 3 if your business will succeed there needs to be a story behind it – this is all about creating that story. Great section to read if you’re struggling with your welcome sequence or about us page. Your Client Acquisition System.
Part 4 Gets into the brass tacks of building the business and the management system. Your Turnkey Management System.
Part 5 explains scaling that business into an enterprise. Your Turnkey Leadership System.
What I particularly like about Beyond the E-Myth
It stops you from putting the cart before the horse – there a certain set of tasks you should be focused on at each stage, and if you follow this model you’ll be focusing in the right place.
This includes that getting the product and fulfilment good before you ramp up marketing. Great advice if you want repeat purchases in the future.
It acknowledges that if you’re going to build a business that will scale, you have to come up with a really solid idea – that has the potential to scale. I found the section on coming up with the idea for the New Co particularly refreshing as it was all about working out what the market wants you to build, not what you want to build.
My 2 favourite sections (and those I think are more relevant to eCommerce businesses) are Part One – where you’re working out what your business should be. And Part Three because the Story is so important, and this is the best explanation for coming up with your story I’ve yet found.
