What I liked:
1. The characters. Wow. The main character Richard was both flawed and heroic at the same time. He was really quite flawed LOL and has a long way to go on his journey (more than one book, I understand) before he will become the man he should be. His relationship with his teenage son Ray was one of my favorite aspects of the story. It felt very down to earth and real.
Joy. Sweet, naïve, classy…there isn’t anything you won’t like about Richard’s love interest Joy. She is one of those too-good-to-be-true types who pulls it off beautifully because she still has her quirks and mild flaws.
The kids. ADORED THE KIDS. Ray, the twins, Arthur…they are each hysterically funny in their turn. I confess that the kids were probably my absolute favorite thing about this novel.
And pretty much everyone else, the misfits and old people at Joy’s clinics, the FBI agents, the bikers, the nanny…I loved them all.
2. The mystery. It was both intriguing and compelling without being too heavy. I easily followed the bread crumbs through the whole story and was absolutely satisfied, and even a little bit surprised and amused, by some of the plot twists in the final chapters.
3. The author’s voice. I don’t know how else to describe this other than…educated. Everything felt well researched and realistic. The medical talk blew my mind (in a good way). Her descriptions made me feel as if I were walking down the streets of a small Florida town again. (I lived in Pensacola for three years so this felt like coming home).
4. The childhood traumas. Yes, I said childhood traumas. There is some HEAVY material in this book—childhood loss, cancer, abuse, death, lingering trauma…but the subject matter is so well handled, I never felt depressed. I felt the pain was handled compassionately and appropriately. I enjoyed, if I’m allowed to use that word, watching the past unfold and seeing the characters struggle with their pain, trying to find ways to make sense of what happened to them, and learning to move on with their lives to pursue a better way of life. It was very gripping, and very well done.
What I would have done differently:
This is where I will do my best to be unbiased. The spiritual talk (not to be confused with RELIGION, which the author very clearly states) is often heavy handed. There are long scenes where the New Age (I think that’s the proper term) spiritual view of the book is discussed at length. It’s very well expressed, very clearly explained, but there is quite a lot of it. Sometimes I felt a little like I was one of Carl’s students LOL learning how to “vibrate with the universe” and such things. It is a view on life and the cosmos I have never been exposed to and I found it fascinating and very clearly explained but sometimes just a bit distracting from the overall plot. I felt as if were straying from the realm of romance/mystery into philosophy.
Other than that, this story delivers what it promises—action, mystery, romance…and some good belly laughs as well. I really think you will enjoy the twists and the characters in this story. The KIDS I can’t tell you how much I loved the kids.
CONTENT: I rate this novel a high PG-13 for Thematic elements, Innuendo, Mild swearing, and Sexuality (There are a couple of steamy kissing scenes that may be too much for young readers and my other “squeaky clean” readers)
FBI Agent Richard Fields has a mundane life in Fort Sunshine, Florida. He drinks, has one-night stands, and is estranged from his child. On the job, he faces a new challenge- someone is murdering politicians all across the country and Richard is in charge of the case.
As part of his investigation, he meets Dr. Joy Clayton. He is charmed by her beauty, but then grows to love her radiance- her ability to transform her patients’ lives. Richard also meets a spiritual mentor, Carl, who will help him solve the investigation, and help Richard tame his demons.
The mystery and romance are well-written and some scenes will have your heart racing. These two parts of the book are enough to make for a great read. But, the spiritual aspect adds a new dimension. Wait until you learn more about the Lords of the Universe.
Do you roll your eyes, when you read things about the “mind-body-spirit link”? What about when you hear “radiate positive energy; keep your vibrational frequency in check?” Are you like Richard and do you want to yell, “What good are all your stupid theories in real life?” Then read this book with an open mind, it’s all fascinating! Recommend!
Here’s my favorite quote. “To be able to get what you want, you need to master the duality of wanting it with all your heart and being able to let go of it.”
