I know what you are thinking. Why would you willingly read a book where you know you are going to cry- that you know is going to hurt? And that is one thing I can promise you- this book hurts. It is beautiful, deeply profound- but bittersweet. I shed my first tear only 5% in, and I have shed many more since, aching ugly crying- some out of joy, some out of sadness, more even just writing this review. Even so, you need to read this book. Some books, some journeys are worth the tears. Tears that cleanse the soul- tears that inspire you to see anew, tears that help you breathe fresh air, tears that change you. And this story? This story is worth every tear.
What happens when you only start to live once you are already dying? When you aren’t sure what is more scary- living or dying? That is the journey of our amazing heroine, Lola, who finds herself determined to live the last days of her life supporting terminally children at Strawberry Fields. She’s tired of fighting, tired of feeling lost and alone. She’s lost a chance at the life she thought she’d once have, and what she has left will slowly decompose, so instead she wants to be useful. Be among people who understand what it is like to be living on borrowed time. Only she finds something there she never expected courtesy of the magnanimous Dr. Roman Archibald - her will to live.
This Monica’s best writing ever. Emotionally resonant, thought provoking, profound and symbolic. The prose is almost poetic- more than words, it is feelings. And these characters? They will never leave you. Lola’s heart is just so tender and loving. I felt every ounce of her pain, of her joy, of her fear and hope. She’s vulnerably strong, selfless and demanding, resolute and brave. Her courage, her compassion, her drive I am holding close in my heart. And Roman- he’s the definition of stoic sacrifice, of gentleness and quiet strength. Their love is the kind of unconditional love I may never find- a bond beautiful and pure, unbreakable and restorative. A connection so vividly created I’m somehow tethered to it, to them.
Lola and Roman’s love story is powerful, moving, both heartbreaking and uplifting, but what has touched me the most is what their love story proves. What their love- this story- has to say about living. Monica is reminding us just how rare, how impactful true love can be. How love is a MIRACLE. Because to find love- to feel it, to give it- that is truly LIVING. And that is the kind of living worth fighting for- even if the battle seems insurmountable. Sometimes that love doesn’t look how we think it will, though- it doesn’t fit our idealized archetype of swoony romance. But that doesn’t make it any less precious, any less real, any less worthy. And Lola and Roman’s story is as beautiful as they come, the kind of story that squeezes the heart and alters the mind. A Love worth fighting for. Unconventional, well yes, but precious, real, and WORTH IT. But Monica gives one more truth- not only is love about living, but love is also about hope. And, no matter how dark, how scared or lost you are, there is always hope. But life isn’t always easy, or neat, it can be unfair and bittersweet- so while hope always comes, it doesn’t always manifest in the way you think. You don’t always find it where you think. This story, despite the plethora of emotions, above all else is really a story of HOPE. Of healing. Hope can heal, but it often doesn’t in the way you expected, or planned.
Beyond the Roses is the kind of book that reminds you how powerful words can be- how they can consume your entire being until you are breathing them as your own. How words inspire such powerful emotions that you feel transformed by reading them. There are books that you remember because you loved them and then there are books that crawl so deeply inside of your heart and mind that they somehow become part of your DNA, become part of the fabric of you. And, Beyond the Roses is part of me now- I am altered. I am full of love and hope- even if my heart is still fragile.
Because my heart is still heavy, it is bereft- but it also beats. It beats for these characters, for a love so special and tender that I cannot stop breathing it. I cannot stop feeling it. Roman and Lola’s story is heartfelt, emotional, raw, and shattering- but it is a miracle. Finding love, finding hope?? That is a gift, that is living. And Lola and Roman? Oh, they live. They live so beautifully. They live in a way that touched my soul- live in a way that gives me hope, that inspires me to live better. And now they live forever in my heart- a heart with each beat feels them, a heart swelling with love and hope. All because they truly lived.
The best stories are the ones you didn’t even know your needed- my heart and soul needed this story, and I think yours will too.
“Life isn’t measured in time, but rather moments, memories.”
I’m not gonna give away any specifics about the story beyond what the blurb will tell you. I will just say that I really loved these characters. From the moment they met Lola and Roman were drawn to one another. I was sucked in and enamored by Lola and Roman’s story. These characters were strong, and beautifully brave. Their story has left an imprint on my heart and soul and I know I will think about them for weeks, if not months to come.
Lola was strong and caring and a beacon of hope even when it was hopeless to the kids that came to the camp where she was volunteering. Roman saw something in Lola from the moment he met her and his goal was helping her, finding more studies and trials she could participate in. Due to their situation they weren’t supposed to fall for one another, but they did and it would lead to them both saving each other in different ways.
“Our story isn’t conventional, but it’s ours.”
This story is going to hit you in the feels. Even if you aren’t typically a book crier I’m willing to bet Monica James makes you cry! And it’s not all sadness it’s at the beauty of this book, for the whole journey. I felt like I was there, like I was feeling these emotions with my people who I fell for. It was a gut punch at times for the harsh reality of what was happening to the characters I had grown to love so much. Then I would be transported into the garden at Strawberry Fields and I could smell the roses and all they represented and my heart overflowed with emotions alongside Lola and Roman. It was just amazing. This story was sweet and swoony, it was sad, it was filled with love and hope, forgiveness, loss, and life. And I am here for all of it! I will definitely read this book again and again, and I will cry. Every.Dang.Time!♥️
My cr8zysockbookblock blog wrap up for this book!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐⭐⭐️-GAHthe number of Stars in the sky for this amazing book in the phenomenal book. I could literally go on for days, actually for weeks and sing from the rooftops the praises I have for this book and for the main characters Lola and Roman. This fantastic romance is going to take you on a roller coaster of feelings. This is the book when you need a good release of the build up of tears that can only come with an epic book hangover kind of therapeutic cry! Monica James is amazing at dark romance but holy moly can she do a romantic drama as well. She constantly amazes me!
🔥🔥🔥🔥- Roman and Lola are smokin’sweet!
🌪Cliffhanger Warning- No cliffhanger! I will say the ending is not your typical HEA but it was perfect for this book.
This story, I truly don’t have the words to describe how it affected me. This is Monica James at her absolute best, and I say that having fallen in love with the darker worlds she has created in her other stories. I loved Saint, Alek and Bull, but Roman and Lola will stick with me for a long time. These were two characters who were stronger than either of them ever realized, and who truly make you believe in love.
There were times while reading this book I felt utterly devastated and completely lost. But there were many times I felt hope and so much love. This is probably one of the most emotional books I’ve ever read, and trust me when I say you go through every emotion you can think of. I laughed, I cried, and I yelled. These characters may be fictional, but I feel like they taught me things about life and love that will never leave me.
Monica James, you truly are one of the most amazing authors I have ever read. Your words matter, and as I said before, your words from this story alone, will stick with me for a long time. How you can take even the saddest things, and turn me hopeful with your beautiful words is absolutely amazing. Thank you for Lola and Roman, I needed this story more than you’ll ever know.
