Editorial Reviews

READER VIEWS - Diana Coyle
The author tells the story in such a way that I felt as though I have lived through the sixties and seventies right alongside her. She sprinkled song lyrics throughout the book and each set of lyrics was chosen to help tell that part of her story. Through the lyrics, I felt her emotions on all different levels.
I found her casual tone refreshing, and I enjoyed her storytelling capabilities. Since this book was based on her adventures during the sixties and seventies, I, the reader, had to keep in mind the casual relationships, both platonic and romantic, that had developed so much differently than a relationship nowadays when a person always has to be cautious of who their partner is and who they have been with prior.
I also found her warm and vulnerable storytelling to be very entertaining because she made me feel her insecurities and there were even times where she was being more assertive in what she wanted. I equally enjoyed reading her misadventures, such as her hitchhiking during the time of the Manson murders or when she attended anti-war demonstrations. Each told adventure added another layer to the already complex person she is. What was amazing was seeing how she matured even more from the previous chapter I read.
Overall, "Beyond the Song" was a fun story to read, and I enjoyed the adventures I went on with Ms. Selick

About the Author

Singer-songwriter Carol Selick performs a repertoire of jazz, rhythm and blues, pop, and her own work, and appears as a vocalist with her husband, jazz trumpeter and vocalist Gordon James. A gifted songwriter, she partnered with Hall-of-Famer Rose Marie McCoy, a songwriter for Nat King Cole, Louis Jordan, Maxine Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, and Elvis Presley, and she co-founded and directed The New Jersey Garden State Opry and the New Jersey Children's Opry, where she wrote and performed original songs. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education and Music from Rutgers, and taught piano and voice for many years. Her recordings, Life is Believing in You and Just Gonna Think About Today, feature a mix of standards and originals, and she performs the bluesy vocals on James's 2019 release, Come On Down, praised in Blues Blast as "piping-hot New Orleans fare, satisfying and spicy with just the right amount of sweet dessert!"

Winner of the 2022 Firebird Book Award in Biographical Fiction and Women's Fiction.

Singer-songwriter Carol Selick traces her coming of age in the tumultuous Sixties and early Seventies in a new autobiographical novel, "Beyond the Song." Beginning each chapter with lyrics she wrote and still performs today, she breezily describes the development of her alter-ego, Carol Marks, as she rebels against her strict suburban upbringing and joins the counter-culture, hoping to make it in the music business.

The author graduated from Rutgers and now performs a repertoire of jazz, rhythm and blues, pop, and her own work. Selick taught piano and voice for many years, and her recordings include "Life is Believing in You" and "Just Gonna Think About Today." She recently recorded "Come On Down" with her jazz trumpeter husband, Gordon James, which includes original New Orleans style music.
