- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2021I really enjoyed this book . The author and I are of similar age and both grew up in neighboring states . I find it amazing she found her family . The book was well written and took my mind off stress in my life . I am so happy for her and only wish she can visit again
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2017What a captivating and beautifully written adoption memoir! Engaging, heartwarming and suspenseful...I could not put this book down. Marijane drew me into her desperate search for identity with poignant descriptions of growing up without answers to life's most basic questions. This is one woman's honest and vulnerable story of longing, heartbreak, perseverance and joy. I highly recommend this book for anyone touched by adoption - professionals, adoptive parents, adoptees, as well as their family and friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2017Beautifully written! So often, the search and reunion experience for international adoptees is isolating and wordless. As a reader, I felt like I was with the author in her in the waiting, joy and uncertainty. Stories like these need to be heard!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2017The touching story, via amazing writing, attracts me to read on until to the end。Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018Marijane Huang takes the reader with her on a journey to find her history, her family, her long lost relationships. On this journey Marijane introduces the reader to life in the military, growing up in a southern city with its many nuances, and growing up yearning for something she missed for all her life...her family. As we read we learn that what Marijane thought was her home was not her home at all. Her journey will carry her to a country where she finds family but also finds herself in the hospital desperately ill. Her words carried me from the beginning to the last word and left me wanting to know more about this young woman and her life. You must read BEYOND TWO WORLDS.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2018Such as captivating story where I journeyed through with the author's search for her birth family. I felt all of her emotions; confusion, heartache, and desperation in this very heart warming story. It is amazing how the words of one persons life can change your view of the adoption experience. Beyond Two Worlds help me to understand the struggle my heart aches of being adopted. Moreover, I understood the pain an adoptee feels when looking for their birth family. That desperate search of identity and sense of belonging it's the one I had not considered. You must read this book. It will change your view of the adoptive experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2017A fascinating story. Throughout the book, the author uses "I" instead of "me" for the object of a preposition or the objective/accusative case (e.g., "for Pat and I" instead of the correct usage, "for Pat and me"). I am surprised the copy editor did not catch this grammatical error. She says that at the end of WWII, Taiwan was returned to the People's Republic of China. Taiwan was returned to the Republic of China. Despite these errors, Asian adoptees will find the book of interest.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018As an adoptee myself, I understand the confusion of being stranded in the middle of two different cultures, as well as the heartache of the birth search. To try and seek out with one's birth family is a deeply emotional journey that takes tremendous courage and persistence - A near out-of-body experience difficult to put into words, let alone share with others. Marijane Huang offers a crystal clear window into the ups and downs of navigating such a journey with rare eloquence and moving honesty, making Beyond Two Worlds essential reading not only for adoptees and adoptive parents, but anyone interested in exploring the meanings of origin, identity, and family.
