5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Fun
By Matt Eland on September 24, 2022
Maglev Metro is beautiful and a ton of fun. The game is well-designed and follows a set of actions that make up a single turn. Turns are very fast and the game is tuned to ensure competition for sparse resources. The game winds up feeling like an advanced form of Ticket to Ride where players can undo most decisions to shift strategies as needed and don't need to worry about the tile placement choices of other players.

There is a solo variant included in the rulebook, but honestly, I had more fun playing as several different players on my own than using that variant. The game just looks more beautiful with the multi-colored lines overlapping.

One important note: depending on your lighting setup at home you may have trouble distinguishing the tan and gold robot tokens. Bezier games recognizes this problem and will ship you darker brown robot tokens at the cost of shipping ($5 USD for me) if this becomes a problem for you like it did for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy a ticket, and catch a ride on a maglev train
By New In Shrink on March 16, 2021
If you’ve never experienced an instant love for a board game just by unboxing it, prepare to be surprised when you get Maglev Metro to the table and start setting it up. There are some remarkably well made components in this game; from a thick double sided game board, colorful recessed player boards with, heavy metal train pieces as well as the first player token, but the absolute best are the clear acrylic track tiles that are printed with each player’s color. Those tiles tie directly into the game’s subway theme, look great, and are fun to arrange on the game board, it is by far my favorite part of this game, and when something as simple as tile laying is made this excellent let me assure you a great game will follow.

Ambitious companies are setting their sights on deploying a robotic workforce to build track and new stations to accommodate the super fast magnetic trains of the future. Players will take turns performing actions such as build track, build stations, moving their train, and picking up and dropping off passengers. This is a game of efficiency and constant movement both on the game board and your player board. You’ll be shifting your robotic workers to and from different tasks in order to maintain as efficient a transportation system as possible, all the while you’ll have the opportunity to begin transporting both passengers and additional robot workers to destination stations. Successful transport of the game’s passenger pieces will allow you customize your own player board to focus on things such as end game scoring opportunities, or gaining additional actions you can take on each of your turns.

There is a satisfying interactive element to gameplay as players are making frequent changes or additions to the game board. Multiple paths to victory are present from the start of the game and make for a welcoming playing field for both new and experienced players. Those paths later become more focused as each player will customize their board differently and all players will be working towards trying to achieve at least 1 of 4 end game scoring bonuses via private objective cards. There are possibilities where a player may attempt to try and score all 4 of these private goals, but in doing so they are making the choice to leave other actions and abilities weaker. The Passenger meeples in the game are limited in both quantity and colors, some of which are permanently placed and will guide your play style.

For all that I love about the game; I will add two cosmetic complaints that I have. I am not a fan of puzzle piece game boards, it is four punched out tiles that you fit together each time you play, these will eventually become points for extra wear and tear that I hate to see occur in my copy. Secondly, and this one is minor but the color of two of the game pieces, the gold and copper robot meeples are incredibly hard to differentiate, I had to paint mine after our first games as it was an extra visual problem that slowed down gameplay a bit.

When you complete games of this you are left with something truly amazing to look at. The transparent track tiles stack onto one another, each player’s train only being allowed to travel on their color track, and what you end up with is a delightful color coded subway map that has an amazing visual presence that both adds to and enhances how fun this game is. Moving you train from station to station, deciding to make it larger so that you can move more passengers, all the choices possible in a game that is easy to play but provides and exciting challenge makes Maglev Metro a fantastic choice for your next game to check out.
