On further examination, I found the grooves on the lid which were supposed to 'lock' it were too wide. To fix this, I wrapped the lid in a kitchen towel (to protect scratching the pretty purple paint) and used a pair of pliers to make the gap smaller. I figured this was far easier than going through the return process.
I now have a fully functional pasta pot.
The strainer became a second pot and named itself "colander". It was easier, but now I had to wash two dishes. I hate washing dishes.
The pasta pots that emerged from the kitchen primordial ooze evolved. Over time, the genetics were altered, and the colander and strainer merged to form a lid. They called it, "Bialetti 7258 Trends Collection 5 Quart Pasta Pot, Orange". I didn't come up with the name so don't blame me.
This evolved being said, "no longer will you suffer burns or washing additional dishes* and can easily make your favorite pastas with ease."
*technically I still have to wash the top but it's easier than a colander so yeah I can make compromises Jenny despite what you told your friends.
The top twists on when you're ready to empty the water (make sure you feel the resistance before flipping it upside down). This pot is oblong and allows keeping longer pasta in tact.
Easy to use, easy to wash. I wash by hand.
1 - the pot is actually a bit smaller than the original.
2 - Everything is thinner - the pot walls and the lid. It appears to be very cheaply made.
3 - The lid doesn't fit right - you can only put it on one way.
4 - The holes in the handles are smaller and make it hard to handle - not good with a pot of just boiled water.
I really wanted to like this pot - but I think Bialetti licensed it to another manufacturer, who cheaped out on the materials.
The design is still great - this execution of it, not so much.
Came well packaged and in perfect condition which is always nice. Item was exactly the size I expected which can be rare when dealing with cookware. The drain holes seem to prevent the pot from boiling over but this means cooking times are slightly increased as pressure is lower in the pot. Not a big deal but definitely a factor to consider before purchasing.
Looks great, if the non-stick coating holds up this pot should last a very long time.
Happy customer so far!
I really wish this thing lived up to the hype.
There is no need for a nonstick coating on the outside of the pot. It just gets scratched up in the sink. The lid rotates 360º with two folded edges that tighten at the handles. Since it can "lock" and "unlock" in both directions, it is never really on there 100000%. Couple mm too far on either side and its loose enough to slide. This isn't so much a design flaw as it is a design limitation. If it only locked and unlocked one way then it would have to have some sort of a catch or wall to lock it one way.
In my experience it never actually fell off, but always made me nervous.
What did fall off however...... Was the small piece of black plastic that keeps the handle from spinning on its screw. Somewhat ironically just like the lid itself that spins all the way around limiting its use. So now I have to use my fingernail to push the lid enough to slide it off the pot. Which is not a big deal on a cold pot. But on a pot full of BOILING WATER, this is a rather unpleasant experience.
