Enter the Bialetti. It's a simple little device, easy to operate and easy to clean. You load it up, set it on the stove, and a few minutes later -- coffee. It's only a little bigger than a French Press, and according to the girlfriend, makes better coffee.
There's not much to it, so it's not like I can write a really witty or snarky review. I will say that it seems that I keep buying them because when it travels with us, it seems to disappear. Our friends like it so much they ask us to leave it and they give us the money for a new one. I think we're on four or five now, so that should speak volumes.
One downside, you must be very careful you don't leave it on the burner too long. If you boil all the water out of it, it ruins the pot and the coffee will never taste right again. So, just be careful with it. We know too many people who have ruined their first one.
So, I got a stainless steel pot, because you can keep it open at all times.
I was enjoying my new Moka pot for a few months when suddenly it started under-extract. I am using (and loving) Lavazza Caffe Espresso, which is a little too fine for Moka, and a new batch from Amazon apparently was so light and fluffy, water would just spurt through it, especially in the beginning of brewing, when you would expect the strongest coffee.
Contrary to Bialetti manual and support, I started packing coffee a little, and now my Moka Napolitano is even better than before.
Great pot, once you get to know it. Highly recommended.
unfortunately, i really don't have much space in my kitchen and also have very few outlets. this little stovetop espresso maker is very simple, makes fine espresso quickly and efficiently, and occupies a fraction of the space that an electric appliance would. in fact, it uses NO counter space, as it seems to reside permanently on my stovetop (with brief daily breaks in my dishrack).
it and the espresso it makes are quick, simple and good.
i also appreciate that it is stainless steel instead of aluminum. some say that aluminum makes superior coffee due to the chemical reaction that occurs with boiling water in aluminum; i say i'd rather avoid drinking the results of that chemical reaction, no matter how good it tastes. stainless forever.
only drawback that comes up while entertaining is that you are limited to the number of servings that the pot will hold, as the pot itself is too hot to simply rinse and refill immediately after the first batch of espresso or coffee. you can get around it by running the hot espresso maker under cold, running water for a minute or two and then starting a second round, but you may find that inconvenient if you often prepare coffee/espresso for many people.
