“Abigail The Belle of Bravery” is Book Three of the Bible Belle series. With the help of her angel Mari, Rooney Cruz learns about the “Power of Bravery” and how it can help her to call upon the courage of God to face any problem with the confidence that He will see her through it. As Rooney watches Abigail save her family, Rooney draws a parallel between her situation with her brother and the neighbourhood kids and Abigail’s situation with David. Will Rooney be brave enough to do the right thing?
“Abigail The Belle of Bravery” introduces our little ones to the story of Abigail from 1 Samuel 25. My children often find it hard to see how many of these Bible stories apply to our everyday lives. The author, Erin Weidemann has an amazing ability to take a historical Biblical problem and show how it can apply to our lives today. In this story, she takes the story of Abigail diffusing a volatile situation with courage and grace and shows how we can do that in today’s world too.
The story focuses on 1 Corinthians 16: 13-14 – “Watch stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” The story of Abigail teaches us that we need to call upon God for the courage to face our problems with confidence even when things look dire. God wants us to face every situation with Love not Anger. We are often taught that showing Love is a sign of weakness, but this story teaches us that it’s a sign of bold strength. If Abigail faced Davids army with anger and force I have no doubt that she would have lost everything she holds dear, possibly even her own life.
When Rooney’s angel Mari, shares with her the adventure of Abigail, Rooney learns that being brave doesn’t mean that you aren’t scared but that you do the right thing anyway. In the previous books Rooney has learned that she already had superpowers, “Prayer” and “Patience” along with her newfound power of “Bravery” and uses these powers to help her with her current problem. I love that these are superpowers that we all can have. They don’t come from a magic star or some crazy magic potion. They come from God and he gives them to each and every one of us, but it’s up to us to use them.
“Abigail The Belle of Bravery” teaches my daughter that there is so much more to being beautiful than what people see on the outside. It shows my daughter that she can be beautiful, smart, strong and courageous. It doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. It teaches our girls that being beautiful is about the whole person…inside and out!
The illustrations are fantastic. They are full of colour and help your child visualize the story. I love how Abigail is not only beautiful, but there is a sense of inner strength about her as well. The book is perfect for reading aloud to younger children and older children will love to read it independently.
We are looking forward to reading more books in the Bible Belles Series.
I love that Rooney learns to respond to stories from the Bible with prayer. The focus in these stories has encouraged me to spend more time praying with Sarabeth. Rooney realizes that Abigail was very brave and Rooney asks God to help her be more brave. She learns how to love her neighbor even when it’s the hard thing to do. Rooney learns what it means to be brave even when it’s hard.
Abigail’s story isn’t an easy one. But neither is being brave. I love having a story that will encourage Sarabeth to do the hard thing. To seek out ways to be kind to others even when she’s scared.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This review is my honest opinion.
With Abigail, we have the belle of bravery, and Rooney, like other Bible Belles stories, is transported back to Biblical times through Mari, her angel sidekick. This time, she gets to see what makes Abigail brave and from Abigail's story, learn what it means to be brave. What I also love about this series, is how readers are given examples of situations that kids can relate to, like being mean, and how to make this right, as in this story. We also learn how to pray with kids through Rooney's prayers. In all a wonderful series to really teach girls the aspects and character traits to be a Godly woman, girl in this case. *wink.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.
Side note: I really appreciate that the Bible Belle books do not "skimp out" of key details within the bible passages. Examples of this are the anger David felt, the wine that Abigail gathered, and the two wives (in a previous book). This opens the opportunity for me to explain to my daughter how it really was RATHER than fluffing it into a good story (like the movie Prince of Egypt).
You all did a WONDERFUL job.
