What do you get when you mix the life-application practicality of a devotional Bible with the expertise and commentary of a study Bible and the user-friendly graphics of an illustrated Bible? The result might look very much like this outstanding resource. Foster, author of the modern Christian classic Celebration of Discipline, and Willard, who wrote The Divine Conspiracy, spearheaded a team of more than 50 scholars, pastors, theologians and others over five years to produce a Bible that is devoted to spiritual formation. (Brueggemann and Peterson led the teams on the Old and New Testaments, respectively, using the New Revised Standard Version.) Foster writes an introductory note explaining the team's basic mission: to provide "a resource for approaching the Bible through the lens of Christian spiritual formation." An opening essay encourages readers to see the entire Bible as "the unfolding story of God's plan for how we can have an intimate love relationship with our Creator," while 15 other essays speak to various aspects and stages of that relationship, from exile and travail to Christ's coming and the future hope of eternity. The editors also include spiritual exercises, profiles of key biblical figures and discussions of how those individuals practiced spiritual disciplines like prayer and worship. Christians of many different traditions will appreciate this ecumenical resource devoted to spiritual renewal.

The text font is to small; I have attempted to give this Bible to several friends - many would not take it because they took one look at the font size and announced they would not read it. I do not have an issue with it as long as my eyes are not tired. My wife has vision problems and has used several different magnification products with little satisfaction. A book reader on a PC with either a text reader or significant enlargement capabilities might work but is not portable.
SIZE of Products: the version with the Deuterocanonical books is approx. 1 and 7/8 inches thick, while the one without is just over 1 and 1/2 inches thick. The pages appear to be from the same paper stock. Both products measure 7.5 x 5.25 inches for height and width, respectively.
REASON TO PURCHASE: The NOTE SYSTEM. The Bible translation is the NRSV copyrighted in 1989.
The note system is composed of two parts.
The first, defines The With God Life in 15 articles interspersed throughout the text.
The second, the study notes at the bottom of the Bible text pages which are integrally connected to the Spiritual Disciplines Index that is located immediately following the book of Revelation. The notes and the Spiritual Disciplines Index take a little effort to figure out how they work together; it is worth the effort - time well spent.
Then there are a few more resources which include: a Concordance; a Profiles Index of major characters; a Spiritual Formation Bibliography; Suggested ways to use this Bible for Spiritual Formation; What is Renovare?; and a set of Maps.
To get the maximum benefit read the front matter: the introductory sections and especially the "To The Reader" article.
The Life with God Bible tends to be more reflective pointing out things that you may want to let simmer - rather than instant gratification - but that is often how life with God goes. The Life with God bible is highly recommended as well as the works of Dallas Willard and Richard Foster.
John 17:3 says "this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God,and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." and The Life with God Bible is a great way to help you experience that eternal life in the present!
Note: The biggest downside of this bible is that the print is really small (the compact version) - I had to get a special pair of glasses to read it, but it was well worth it. I really hope Kindle editions that are fully searchable will be available for all these bibles soon!
The resource and reflection material provides quality discussion in applying the biblical principles to daily living.
I believe this study Bible answers that question by offering the most encouraging approach and a wealth of material to accomplish that goal.
I am 80 years young and have been a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ for nearly 50 years. In that period of time I have owned numerous Bibles...none can compare to the work of Renovare and its staff that have created this profound study Bible...the heart of which is the "Immanuel Principle" - 'God is with us' guiding the sincere seeker in the how-to experience His presence on a continuum.
I am certain that as I remain faithful to the directions and teachings of this work, I will grow in His grace and knowledge. Thank you, Renovare.
