For most serious students this view arises from more than the vague suggestion contained in the Genesis text alone. It results from reading that text in concert with other Bible verses touching upon the Creation—as well as verses touching upon the long career of Lucifer/Satan before his contact with Adam and Eve. (Jer 4:23; Job 38:7; Eze 28:12-19; Isa 14: 12-17).
While a precise and dogmatically asserted doctrine may continue to elude us, it is almost irrefutable that some form of discontinuity in the time-flow did occur. It is Biblically clear that Satan began as a perfect creature named Lucifer, not as a corrupted being named Satan. At the time of the visible Creation Lucifer and the other angels joyfully observed the new cosmos not as fallen beings but as the “sons of God” (Job 38:7; Isa 14:12). His career has been a long one characterized by progressive corruption. Much of Lucifer’s career obviously preceded his contact with Adam and Eve, whom, as Satan, he had to approach while hidden in the body of a serpent. Such a process of spiritual corruption would necessarily impress itself upon the visible Creation and lead to Earth—as part of Lucifer’s pre-fall domain—becoming “without form and void” when Lucifer’s corruption had finally run its course.
The Bible, Genesis and Geology provides a well-reasoned and scientific exposition of how Lucifer’s fall may have left its mark on Earth’s early history.

"I've had the wonderful opportunity to read Gaines' book and to communicate with him via e-mail. As a fellow Christian and believer in the Ruin-Restoration Theory (Gap Theory) I found his book full of good, solid, and convincing geological evidence the earth is vastly older than the 6,000 years the Young-Earth creationists promote. More than that, he reveals the geological evidence that supports both an old earth and a recent restoration. Gaines does NOT promote some kind of compromise with the Theory of Evolution. He is a Biblical creationist through-and-through. Gaines is fully convinced from Scripture that the `days' of Genesis were literal days during which God restored the glorious earth that had been ruined by Lucifer. Here is what Gaines says:
`The six days of Genesis are the account of a re-creation or regeneration of a previously-existing heavens and earth, not the original first-time creation of all things by the Lord, and that Genesis Chapter One's seven creative days are certainly not a geological history of the earth.'
This is important because too many people think the geologic record is a physical record of the six creation days in Genesis. It is not! The geologic record shows the earth existed long before the six days and long before Adam. The geologic record reveals evidence for the Ruin-Restoration Theory. What evidence is that? You'll have to read the book to see what he says about global dust spikes, paleoclimate indicators, volcanic activity, the 1993 Greenland Ice Sheet Project Two (GISP2), and the evidence for a mass destruction and extinction of life just before Adam was created. Gaines shows how the scientific evidence fits the true Biblical account of creation.
If you or someone you know has always been confused by claims that the earth is only 6,000 years old, then I recommend The Bible, Genesis & Geology, by Gaines Johnson.
I want to say one more thing to the Christian readers out there. There are some people criticizing Gaines' book because he isn't a geologist. (He doesn't have `scientific credentials'.) As a Christian I hope you recognize this as a mean-spirited, ad hominen attack. You don't need a doctorate in Meteorology to know whether it's raining or not. These critics don't tell you HOW his geology is wrong; they only attack him personally, hoping to prevent you from buying his book. From my experience, this method of attack is strong evidence they can't refute his claims. The very same kind of attack could be leveled against practically every book in the Bible. Don't read Matthew because he was only a tax collector. Don't read Peter or James or John because they were just fishermen. Don't read the Book of Psalms because David was just a shepherd. Believe me; Gaines knows more than enough geology to show how geology proves the earth is more than 6,000 years old. And if you don't believe it, check his facts with what credentialed-geologists say. The only scientists who believe the earth is 6,000 years old are Young-Earth scientists, and there are plenty of them with `Diploma-Mill' degrees, Honorary Doctorates, and degrees from `universities' whose campuses are limited to the inside of a Post Office Box. As a Christian, I hope you aren't persuaded by such anti-Christian attacks. Gaines knows his stuff, and Gaines knows his Lord."
Now concerning the second edition, I don't see how anyone could read this book and still believe the Young-Earth/Flood-Geology interpretation of Genesis. You really have to reject the discoveries of science in order to believe the earth was created 6,000 years ago and believe all the geologic strata and formations were caused by Noah's Flood 4,000+ years ago. This is not a statement meant to compromise the Bible with the Theory of Evolution. Gaines Johnson absolutely rejects the Theory of Evolution. Gaines Johnson absolutely believes God created all the life forms on earth. Gaines Johnson absolutely believes Noah's Flood was global and historic. What Gaines Johnson doesn't believe is the wild imaginary events created in the wild imaginary minds of Young-Earth/Flood-Geologists. The Bible makes no mention, not even a hint, that Noah's Flood was responsible for forming the geologic column, depositing the layers of the Grand Canyon, slamming the continents together to form mountain chains, ripping out all the forests and creating all the coal seams in one years' time, etc. The Bible doesn't say the Flood caused these great geologic cataclysms. The Bible says the waters steadily rose for the first half of the flood and steadily receded for the last half. Its stated purpose was to destroy air-breathing animals; and it did that without destroying the entire face of the earth. The Bible seems to indicate the Flood was global, but relatively gentle. The Bible says an olive tree lived through it and produced new growth very quickly after the Flood receded. That doesn't sound very cataclysmic to me.
What Gaines Johnson does, is show how the evidence from geology proves the Flood was relatively gentle, JUST LIKE THE BIBLE SAYS. Gaine's whole purpose for The Bible, Genesis & Geology is to show his readers that the Bible's account of the Creation is true when compared to real science. Gaines does this because he wants his readers to know the Bible's account of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true when compared to real history. Like all good Gap Theory defenders, Gaines wants to bring people to a saving faith in Christ.
The Bible, Genesis & Geology helps remove the pseudo-scientific stumbling blocks that keep people from believing the Bible. If you, or someone you know, rejects the Bible because of the pseudo-science presented by the Young-Earth crowd, this book is the book to buy!
