A professor read short excerpts from this book to us to illustrate the life of a frontier preacher. We bought a copy to read all of the stories.
Preachers are often portrayed as pushovers and wimpy. This book recounts stories from the west that prove preachers can preach to save your soul and shoot to save your life.

A humerous look at frontier religeon, rough in life and ready to go to the next life. THis is religeon on the cutting edge of the frontier as viewed by those who lived it. I refer to this book often in my sermons for today's "pioneers" and the problems faced in their world. "Bad men" preachers backing up their sermons with the power of Mr. Colt at their side. The "unchurched" grabbing hold of their vision of God's word . . . great from beginning to end.

I've worn out two copies and am working on the third.

An entertaining look at the toughness of nineteenth century ministers who preached the gospel on the wild frontier. Ministers who think they have it rough today might want to give this book a read. Non ministers will equally enjoy this lively and interesting book.

Very interesting description of the religious status of the American Frontier.
Today's religious people quote, "One nation under God..." BUT only 2% of the people in that time had any religious background.
This book tells the amazing story of the need to evangelize early America! Folks fled England for religious freedom all right...some of them fled in order to be free from being forced to BE religious!
The early preachers rode on horseback, with a bible in their pocket and a gun in their hand, spreading the news of Christianity.
Gives a new perspective on the "early days" of our country and religious freedom.
A great read!

"Bible in Pocket, Gun in Hand; The Story of Frontier Religion" is a unique book that is both historical and a delightful reading experience. Based on journal accounts of early preachers of all denominations and other primary sources, the book recounts what it was really like on the frontier. Many humorous incidents, historical reviews of frontier society (camp meetings, etc.), and one of the most detailed accounts of "circuit riding preachers" of both Baptist and Methodist persuasion. Well documented, and a brief 166 pages, you won't be able to put it down!

This was a fun book to read. many of the events you'll read about and then ask yourself "really?" But you know it probably did. It's also funny to think how little some things have changed in some areas. A good read.
