Robin A. Parry talks about those parts of the Old Testament in his new book The Biblical Cosmos: A Pilgrim's Guide to the Weird and Wonderful World of the Bible. What parts? The parts of the Bible that seem to indicate the authors believed in a flat earth, sea monsters and weird demons out in the desert. I'll be honest, I cannot remember a time in my undergraduate or graduate studies where I was given a truly biblical (non-apologetic) approach to these strange texts. So I approached this book with a great deal of excitement. I was not disappointed.

After a brief introduction to ancient views of cosmologies, the book dives into how the Bible views the ancient world. There are four parts to the book. Part one deals with how the Bible views the world. Here, Parry takes us through a tour of the Israelite view of the ocean, land, mountains, weather and sheol/hades.

Part two, takes us through a tour of how the Bible views the heavens. Here we get a view of the sky, stars, angels, archangels and more. I'll leave some of Parry's arguments to the end of the review. However, it is a fascinating section that deserves careful reading.

Part three, deals with how the cosmos is patterned upon the temple and how Jesus transforms the biblical cosmos. I absolutely loved how Jesus is shown to restore every single element of the cosmos through his life, death and resurrection. Parry finally presents a convincing case as to why Christ actually did travel to hades after death.

Finally, part four deals with how we can apply all this cosmological language to our every day life. Parry finds our ability to draw meaning from the metaphors. Metaphor allows us to see the cosmos as truly living (not in a pantheistic way).

The Biblical Cosmos is a truly unique and paradigm shifting book.

There is no shortage of scholarly books that touch on themes of ancient cosmology and science, comparisons to other Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) literature, culture, religion, etc. I don't know of any, however, that delve into the biblical cosmos so thoroughly, yet in a readable and accessible format that's beneficial to non-scholars like myself. There's an incredible amount of information here - so much that a person can't possibly retain it all. While the focal point is the Biblical cosmos (Both the OT/Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament – though weighted more to the OT), there is a ton of info on surrounding ANE cultures. But this book isn't a handbook of mere ANE information or trivia - there's a different and refreshing perspective here. There's a lot that could be said but I'll just mention two things.

First, the author makes no attempt to present ancient cosmology as being confirmed by modern science and cosmology - this is not a book of apologetics or a rally the troops/defend the Bible manifesto. I was not aware of just how different ANE views are, and the degree to which these views on the nature of the cosmos were intricately woven into their worship, culture, etc (as demonstrated through extensive references). It’s one thing to hear things like “ANE culture was far different than our own” and another to see a thorough and convincing presentation of just HOW different. Having only been exposed to bits and pieces of ANE cosmology and “science” prior to reading this book, at times it was pretty uncomfortable reading.

In Scripture and in the Ancient Near East (ANE), there are various motifs presented, in particular when it comes to the cosmos. The understanding of the heavens, earth, stars, the underworld (death), and even the temple are greatly important for understanding many of the patterns and principles presented in Scripture to include how best to interpret and apply the passages that speak of such things. Robin Parry’s helpful and fascinating book The Biblical Cosmos: A Pilgrim’s Guide to the Weird and Wonderful World of the Bible, walks the reader through several important concepts they might never have considered in their journey through Scripture.

Parry rightly notes a basic truth of hermeneutics, namely that of understanding the text from the point of the original author and the original audience and then looking at how to apply that understanding to our lives today. As he journeys through the world of the biblical cosmos and the Israelite and ANE understanding of such issues, Parry keeps that important foundation in mind. He presents a four part approach to looking at the biblical cosmos with part one providing an overall tour of the biblical earth, part two engaging the biblical idea of the heavens, part three looking at the temple motif, and part four discussing the question of whether we can inhabit the biblical cosmos today.

Many of the elements of the biblical cosmos that Parry discusses I submit will be quite familiar to anyone who has spent even a short amount of time reading Scripture. For instance, we are familiar with the fact that the sun, moon, and stars were created to give light and to define in part the times and seasons. We have an understanding to some degree of the importance of the temple.
