"Nancy deClaisse-Walford's work offers a useful guide for college students, seminarians, and pastors to develop basic skills in biblical Hebrew. I would also encourage any pastor who has previously studied biblical Hebrew to add this book to his or her library."

This was the required text for a Hebrew class I am taking. I found the book easy to understand and use. Each chapter is summarized with a list of "shortcuts" that are very helpful in understanding the basics of Hebrew. The only negative is that the enphasis is on mechanics. Much of why things are as they are in Hebrew is becuase of how it is spoken. That perspective had to be added by my professor.

I'm not planning to become a Hebrew scholar, but would like to understand what I am reading when I use a Lexicon or other tool. This book is excellent for someone who wants that kind of understanding.

This is a good and useful book if all you want to do is check out a particular word or phrase in a Hebrew lexicon (i.e., BDB) but it is in no way a substitute for a regular course of study in Biblical Hebrew.

If you really want to understand Biblical Hebrew and work with it, you need to settle in for slogging through to the end of a couple of semesters of study.

On the other hand, if what you really want is a 'once over lightly', this would be an excellent choice.

The format of the book is easy to understand and moves at a pace which is easy to grasp unlike other beginners book which are purely technical apparatus; designed for individuals who has grasp of the basic i.e. pronunciation, vowels, how the consonants drop and change depending upon person of the word.
