In this warm, funny, literate comedy, two French actors portray two French actors, friends at odds with one another in every possible way. Lambert Wilson (MONUMENT MEN, MATRIX:REVOLUTIONS, OF GODS AND MEN) plays Gauthier: tall, handsome, and the beneficiary of a leading role in a wildly popular, wildly ridiculous soap opera. Fabrice Luchini (WOMEN ON THE 6TH FLOOR) plays Serge, a serious actor-turned middle-aged curmudgeon who has met with far less professional success. Serge has renounced the stage to live on the glorious île de Ré, located off France's Atlantic coast. Gauthier arrives at Serge's coastal hideaway to try to convince his pal to return to Paris to play opposite him in a new production of The Misanthrope. When not criticizing each other in rehearsals, they bike along the island's windswept beaches and consider their options -- as personified by a local porn actress and an attractive Italian divorcée -- as well as the ever-present lure of island real estate.
From the director of WOMEN ON THE 6TH FLOOR .
A warm and winning chamber piece about two actors taking on The Misanthrope and trying not to strangle one another in the process, Philippe Le Guay's Cycling With Moliere (Alceste a bicyclette) provides further proof of the Gallic writer-director's talent for crafting finely acted, middlebrow dramedies with a heart. Featuring a scene-stealing performance from leading man Fabrice Luchini. --Hollywood Reporter

So the idea for this movie obviously was to cram tidbits of Moliere's text into a modern scenario. The result would be ipso facto "literate," and hence something adored by the French public.
It worked. The pretentious French public loved it--since to feel otherwise would mean that you didn't appreciate Moliere.
Americans, having no pre-conceived notion of Moliere's presumed genius, will probably wonder what this movie's about. Seems to be nothing more than a series of arguments between two middle-aged men.
Alas, that's all it is. Don't waste your time.
