Ever since being adopted by Joy back in The New Abbey Girls, Maidlin has shrunk from growing up, even as Rosamund has launched herself into every adventure. Now, Maidlin finds herself alone in France, confronted by an unwell Biddy, with nothing but heself to rely on, and, as has happened each time in the past, rises to the need of others.
In some ways, this is just the natural continuation of Maidlin's story; in others, it's the key turning point, her rite of passage where she stops being "poor little Maidie" in anyone's eyes (including her own).
As part of the series, it's a key chapter for Maidlin (though the series is excellent about not requiring you to have read any other books to understand each one). As a standalone, it's still an interesting read, but not the best entry point into the series.
