Stephanie Cruz and Jake Lautner share connections—her brother is his friend; his aunt was her favorite teacher; her family showed him how good a loving a family could be, but which he never had; they even shared professional connections—she writes a love advice column for the regional paper, and he runs a multi-million dollar tech date-matching company. And, she crushed on him in high school until, after agreeing to take her to a school dance, she discovered that it was a pity date. And now, they share what was to be a one-night stand and then a second.
When visiting Stephanie’s office, her boss spots him, realizes who he is, and later approaches Stephanie offering her an incentive—being assigned to write something—anything—other than the advice column—for an interview with Jake. But, Stephanie is not sure about the assignment. She is no longer objective about Jake—truth be told she has never been objective about Jake, bouncing her whole life between love and hate. So, how can she be as close to Jake as she needs to be and over the time an interview would take and not fall for him even more deeply? But, the boss who won’t let the interview get away, forces Stephanie to interview him—to travel to LA and spend time with him—on his plane, at his work and in his penthouse—to get the full story. And with such close proximity, can what Stephanie and Jake share not go nuclear? And when Jake’s business partner shows interest in Stephanie and other women make overtures to Jake in front of Stephanie, can any relationship go forward—especially now that they secretly share a bun in the oven?
Crowne weaves a tale of desire mingled with self-protection. Both Stephanie and Jake long for the other, but fall into self-preservation mode, seeking distance from each other, even once nature tries to pull the two into a relationship with the connection of a baby. As the two struggle to protect their hearts, they come to recognize that they were meant to be a couple.
I received a free copy of this book as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review, but I enjoyed the reading experience so much that I bought a copy for my "read-again" titles.
