2010 Big Basin Vineyards Homestead GSM California Blend - red 750ml

Wine Tasting Notes

  • Winery : Big Basin Vineyards
  • Winemaker : Bradley Brown
  • Three Word Taste Summary : floral , expressive , balanced
  • Food Pairings : Roasted meats, steaks, stews, lamb, dark chocolate
  • Suggested Drinking Window : Between 2012 and 2018
  • Tasting Notes
Aromatic with great body, balance and finish, this is a wine that reveals the exceptional vineyards behind it. The wine possesses a beautiful dark red/purple color with an exuberant nose of black and red raspberries, red currants, crushed rocks and hints of crushed flowers and anise. Bright and expressive on the palate with a melange of red and black fruit, mouth coating tannins and a nice long finish. The moderate alcohol level and good acidity make this a great food wine and one that is likely to age exceptionally well, however, it is very approachable and enjoyable now.
  • Vintage Notes
Our 2010 Homestead is a blend of 37% Grenache, 36% Syrah and 27% Mourvedre. Most of the fruit is sourced from exceptional vineyards in the Santa Cruz and Gabilan Mountains as well as Paso Robles. This wine receives every bit as much attention as our top cuv_es and is fermented on native yeasts in the same 1+ ton fermenters and then aged in French oak barrels (42% new for this wine). Also Reviewed By: Rhone Report - 92 pts; Tanzer's International Wine Celler - 91 Points. The 2010 is our first vintage working with this vineyard. Our first pick was on October 21 and consisted of equal parts Syrah and Grenache which we co-fermented. The second pick was on October 29 and consisted of Grenache and Mourvedre. The majority of the wine was aged 19 months in 300 liter hogs heads made with light and medium toast French oak known to integrate thoroughly and maintain transparency and pure fruit expression. The co-fermentation resulted in a seamless integration of the different varietals. The final blend is 49% Grenache, 39% Syrah and 12% Mourvedre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great wine for many occasions! December 14, 2012
By Crystal
Big Basin Vineyards is one of my favorite producers. Every wine is impeccable - as you will note if you read the professional reviews. The Homestead is my go to wine for every day entertaining - and while not as concentrated as their single vineyard offerings, it is every bit as complex and interesting with a beautiful nose

5.0 out of 5 stars GSM! December 19, 2012
Ooooh, this is a good one. I'm a Rhone-style wine fan and this delivers in spades with it's complex blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mouvedre. I also love that it comes from my backyard, the Santa Cruz hills. It has a perfectly round mouth feel and medium to long finish. Grilled smokey meats and hearty veggies will get along with this wine just fine.
