About the Author
Finith Jernigan uses proven systems and technology in new ways to help people everywhere move toward a more sustainable and connected world. He is a visionary architect whose unique style bridges the gap between novice and expert. He is an expert whose creative writing style makes technical information transparent to users at all levels of expertise. Anyone who has read literature on change in the building industry knows that the focus is often on expert users. Nearly every discussion focuses on technology. There is little attention dedicated to those just getting started. Finith is an exception, introducing new tools and processes into the mainstream, making complex ideas about the future of the built environment clear to everyone. He has made information modeling real for people. Finith’s award-winning books are clearly written guides to achieving the benefits that information models enable. In BIG-BIM 4.0 he continues his no-nonsense descriptions of complicated concepts that made his first book, BIG-BIM little-bim directly applicable to building industry business processes that increase the effectiveness of building design, construction, and operation. With more than 40 percent of the world’s resources focused on building construction and operation, many industry leaders predict that effective use of information models will help fight global climate change. 4Site Press publishes content that stresses built environment working practices, methodologies, and behaviors to help people leverage resources, compete in a global market, and grow more proficient and productive in the planning, design, construction and operation of facilities.

He describes a future state for the construction industry similar to the current state of other industries, such as airlines and hotels, in taking advantage of shared information and rapid data processing. He also refers to case studies, projects and instances which either himself or his peers, such as Onuma Inc., have built databases to maintain, share and utilize information through the life of projects. For them the future is now. They are doing this and now the onus is on the rest of the industry to adapt.
This is a book by one of the pioneers in our industry and should be required reading for students in Architecture and Engineering schools.
BIG BIM 4.0 guides us through this next generation of what it means to use BIM. Even power users might be surprised to learn new ways to leverage their skills by employing all the interoperable ways BIM can be pressed into service. This ecosystem vs. a single application paradigm introduces compelling opportunities for architects, building owners, facility managers, etc. in implementing BIM. The book is a fast read, but will also serve as a handy reference to keep coming back to.
Finith's first book was a must have in my academic curriculum too, and BIG BIM 4.0 has now been added as well for my students. This book is most appropriate for Master's level, however I'm reconsidering this notion as I write this, because it is not difficult for one to follow the practice steps within the book and achieve what the author has written about.
