Big band alert! Fans of big band jazz, this isn't just another collection of the same old big band music. No, this collection contains 100 tracks of jazz-most of it up tempo, rip roaring, (or at least) toe tapping music. The music spans the years 1927-1960, weighted more towards the 1930's-1940's, when big bands were in their hey-day. And the digitally remastered sound is very crisp and open sounding. Hearing this music on good equipment at a slightly elevated volume is a revelation-even the mid tempo tunes have a real presence. Even the earliest tracks (1927-28) sound good, if slightly thin-but the music takes precedence over any sonic issues.

Orchestras include Jean Goldkette (the earliest at 1927), McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Jelly Roll Morton, Red Nichols, and His Five Pennies, Don Redman, Isham Jones, Bennie Moten, Benny Carter, Red Norvo, Erskine Hawkins, Earl Hines, Jay McShann, Tiny Bradshaw, Boyd Raeburn, Illinois Jacquet, Oscar Pettiford, Gerry Mulligan (the latest at 1960) and many others in between. The biggest names are also here, like Glen Gray, Chick Webb, Fletcher Henderson, the Dorsey Brothers (together and singly), Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Louie Bellson, Sun Ra, Gil Evans, and a number of other well known groups. There's 100 orchestras represented by one tune each-basically "all killer, no filler.

Great reproducing onto a disc. No introductions of each band so "name that tune, name that singer and band" game is easy to play. Makes a great gift!
