I was tarred and feathered when I made the mistake of bringing this book to Kermit, Texas. Fortunately, before the townsfolk could do any more damage, I told them that I'd turn them all into newts with my magic ring if they didn't leave me alone. Upon hearing my threat of sorcery they all turned and ran in terror.

In summary. I give the book 5 stars for quality but 1 star for failing to include a disclaimer about the dangers of attempting to bring knowledge into Kermit, Texas.

I cannot praise this amazing, wonderful book enough. I bought it for my sharp, curious four-year-old daughter and she loves it, often requesting a reading from it at bedtime instead of her storybooks. It is truly a "big book of everything." It's sections cover human anatomy and physiology, animals, plants, the universe, planet earth, basic physics and chemistry, and an extensive "key facts" section in the back of the book. Although I am college educated, reading it has been like taking a refresher course, and I have learned many new things from this book. It is factually accurate, SPECTACULARLY illustrated, visually interesting, very readable, and somehow, believe it or not, excellent and useful for persons aged 4 through adult. If I could, I would buy every child a copy.

WARNING: May contain pictures of pregnant women! This conflicts directly with the idea taught in Kermit Elementary School that babies are in fact delivered by storks, or Storkism. Kermit, Texas, maintains that pregnant women are a myth! Anyone woman who appears to be pregnant obviously must have a beach ball under their shirt. We must continue to shield our children from the evil and dangerous idea that babies come from pregnant women! After all, would you rather be brought down from the clouds by a clean, fluffy, loving stork, or be brought into the world by pregnant women and icky, painful, messy, "natural" childbirth? Oh, won't somebody please think of the children!?

Also, this book does not teach that magical rings exist which can turn people invisible. Kermit Elementary School received at least one credible "terrorist threat" of this nature, wherein a boy attempted to turn his classmate invisible. Although the attempt failed, the boy was suspended as principal Roxanne Greer believed his classmate may have suffered harm to his emotional health. She did not express concern over the emotional health of the boy that was suspended, and she may secretly pine for the days before the PC police when you could try someone for being a wizard. The jury is still out on whether or not there are magic cloaks that can turn people invisible.

I love this book! It has great pictures and lots of easy to understand information. In fact, I bought it based on the tree and shrub section. I have many wonderful nature books but when studying the inside of the trunk of a tree, this book presented the information perfectly! Although I myself do not entirely accept the evolution theory (as it is presented to us in school) it is obvious evolution occurs around us. I myself chose to permanent marker out all the evolution theory stuff for my little children who are not ready to make an uninformed decision on evolution without my involvement. The reason for this review was to say that I really, really appreciated the many, MANY times the book presented controversial information NOT as FACT like it is usually presented to our children but more as " this is the best estimated guess of scientists today... and scientists used to think this...but were proved wrong when we learned this..." I think this is a much more realistic view of how science works. We know what we know today and we will know different things tomorrow. I guess I'm trying to say the book is awesome and it handles the science talks very responsibly and maturely and even though there were pages I did not personally believe in and chose not to teach my children -- I would not hesitate in purchasing it again!
