Now there is one VERY IMPORTANT thing to note here. This product page has designated this book as suitable for "Baby through Pre-School." I am not at all sure who came up with that bit of fantasy, but this book is geared more for kids 4th grade through high school. The actually reading level of this thing is at about mid 7th grade level; the same level most adult popular novels are written.
As the books touts on its cover, there are answers to literally hundreds of questions children will ask, or would ask if they knew enough about the subject to ask a question if they did. Those looking for books on a specific subject need look elsewhere as the questions here are rather random in nature and certainly do not cover every subject in the known universe. I had to smile when I saw that another reviewer, at another site, gave this book low marks because his grandson never asked any of the questions found in this book. I shook my head when I saw others give bad reviews because they "could not find anything in this book they did not already know and that in general, they found it all boring. Hmmm. Go figure.
The book is broken down into three general areas. They include Our World, How Things Began, The Human Body, How other Creatures Live and How things are Made.
Each question asked is quite precise:
How big is the universe?
Who invented shoes?
Why doesn't an igloo melt inside?
What is regeneration?Read more ›
The "big book" is a consolidated version of the five volumes, although it does not have all the questions covered in original volumes. Still, it is enough information to get started on a topic a young teenager would be interested in.
I gave it as a gift to a friend's son, but quickly skimmed through the book. Only thing disappointing is the print quality and paper.
I am really happy to find this new copy and it is such a nice gift for my cousins.
They enjoy reading it and from time to time, they are talking about it, including educating some other kids while they are talking.
The book was not in great condition - at least my interpretation of "Good" was very different from what I received.
Many pages had scribbling with color crayons. The book binding was loose and saggy.
Also the delivery was _very_ weird - the book was sent via USPS - i.e. the postal system (not UPS).
This added essentially 3 more days to the delivery.
