BIG AND BRIGHT starts with one of the cutest meets ever. Heroine Cory Bright and hero Holt Berringer, a Texas Ranger, meet late at night in a convenience store when both grab the last MoonPie on the shelf, and neither will let go. When a robbery interrupts, neither gets the MoonPie. Instead, Cory is the only one who saw the doofus lead robber's face, and Holt glues himself to her to "protect" her.
Cory has no need for protection. She's a great heroine, always up to a challenge, always able to think on her feet, never afraid to say what she thinks. At first I wasn't sure I would like her because of the chip on her shoulder, but she grew on me quickly and kept me laughing as she made friends with a variety of interesting people on funky Sixth Street in Austin, from the employees in her newly inherited parfumerie to the patrons of the nearby biker bar.
Charming but overbearing Holt falls for Cory immediately. Cory finds him physically attractive but thinks he is otherwise totally not her type. Most of this fun novel consists of Holt finding ways to stay close to Cory and to show her that he is a multifaceted man who shares many of her interests. Can Holt overcome Cory's prejudices about men in general and about arrogant, bold, self-confident men in particular? (Please don't be put off by that description of Holt; sure, he's arrogant, but he's got every right to be.) Can he persuade her to stay in Austin when her goal is to find an advertising job in Los Angeles? You'll have to read the novel to find out.
Probably anyone who likes romance will like this novel. I usually read historical romance, but BIG AND BRIGHT intrigued me with its Austin setting. The city was well-drawn and the perfect place for cosmopolitan Cory and country boy Holt to try to find common ground.
in Jan's books are smart and tough with a lot of humor and honesty.
This is a series I have read several time. Look for the other 2 books in this series you will totally enjoy.
