I was lucky enough to see Mumford and Sons just before they blew up at a little venue with 200 people in Phoenix and then less than a year later with over 10,000 people at the biggest venue of this Rail Road Revival Tour in Tempe. Being at the concert was an unforgettable experience, and this documentary captures that brilliantly.
I would have liked more interviews with the muscians, I would have liked to have learned more about them. That is my only criticism of this video. I watched it two times in the few hours since it arrived via UPS. The music, the bands, the train, it is musical nirvana.
Nothing will beat having been a part of the rail road revival tour, but this video captures it and I hope you will watch it and watch three brilliant bands, Mumford, Old Crowe Medicine Show, and Edward Sharpe make beautiful music that will have you tapping your feet and dancing while watching this over and over again.
In any case don't expect a concert film. It isn't. Certainly there is plenty of music, especially the final joyful 3 band collaboration on "This Train." The unrated film is the Amtrak equivalent of a PG Jack Kerouac "On the Road" film. We see the various bands practice, write songs together, jam and generally have a good time with various family members along for the ride. For this viewer, I enjoyed the gig in Austin when the Mumfords invited the Austin H. S. marching band to perform with them with the hit song, "The Cave." The kids were having a blast in front of thousands of fans.
The Blu ray version comes in 1080p with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio and includes a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack as well as 2.0 PCM Stereo. They do a good job of transforming the folk, bluegrass and rock songs from the bands. The video and audio are both excellent. The package includes a DVD version with compressed Dolby Digital audio (5.1 and 2.0). Extras include an interview with the director Emmett Malloy and some of his photos as well as some deleted scenes.
A unique concept done very well. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds.
Only reason I knocked it down to 4 stars was because it should have been longer. I could have watched this thing forever and didn't want it to end. Especially the last part when all the band members were on stage sining "This Train" together, that was just an awesome uplifting experience.
If you are fan of any of these bans, I highly encourage you to pick this up. Quick note though: while it does splice in concert footage, it is not a "Concert Movie", so don't expect any of the stops to be fully recorded and shown.
