“Yeah, well, she broke mine, too.”
FINAL DECISION: The most emotionally complex story of the series so far, BIG EASY TEMPTATION expands the overarching conspiracy while always keeping the focus of the story on the characters and their relationship.
THE STORY: At their first meeting almost decade ago, Naval Officer Dax Spencer knew that Holland Kirk would be special to him. The two circled around one another for years until 3 years ago. The death of Dax’s father brings the two together as Dax seeks answers to what happened to his father. Holland’s work as a NCIS agent gives her jurisdiction and for a time the two work together and finally begin building a relationship. Then everything falls apart separating the two. Now the two reunite as the conspiracy The Perfect Gentlemen are investigating appears connected to Dax’s father’s death. Dax has questions for Holland about what happened three years ago.
OPINION: I loved the emotional complexity of this story. The narrative is unusual in that the story is divided in two parts. The first part takes place in the past and ends badly with Holland and Dax separated. The second part begins in present time and ultimately brings the two lovers back together. I especially liked that the story takes the time to bring readers into the past and show the entirety of what went wrong with Holland and Dax. Without that context, it would be difficult to understand and forgive the betrayals that tore them apart. By following Dax and Holland through the entirety of their story, the pain they both experience is more immediate, fresher and thus more devastating than a mere exposition of the past would have been.Read more ›
Dax Spencer thought his father's alleged suicide and the scandal preceding it were the lowest points of his life, until the woman he loved betrayed him and left him, but he got his payback in the cruelest way possible and put her behind him. Or tried to. Now, new information has surfaced that supports his belief that his father was framed and killed as part of a conspiracy bigger than they ever imagined, one that has already taken the lives of their loved ones and has the potential to do great damage to lives and legacies. Dax is determined to clear his father's name and then get to the bottom of this plot, but first he must face to woman who broke his heart years ago.
Caught in a sticky web, Holland Kirk gave up her chance for happiness with Dax to protect him and for that, he paid her back by breaking her trust in the worst way. Now he's back to re-open the investigation into his father's death and she has no choice but to work with him again.
I love Dax and Holland so much. Holland is confident and tough, except when it comes to Dax. Dax is alpha to the core, protective about his loved ones and really sweet, but I especially love that he didn't play games with his feelings for Holland and put himself out there, even after he hurt her so badly.Read more ›
The story is an exceptionally-well done collaboration by two skilled authors in The Perfect Gentlemen franchise.
The writing in Big Easy Temptation was very good. It was a dual point of view story and both Holland and Dax had distinctive voices. I also couldn't tell when the authors switched back and forth. It could easily have been written by one author. The plot was mysterious and kept me guessing.
Dax was a man who grew up with many privileges but chose to work hard. He was devoted to his family and friends. I loved his cocky and almost forceful nature. Dax went for what he wanted and wasn't likely to take no for an answer.
Holland was sweet and intelligent, but she also had a lot of strength. She was willing to put the safety of those she loved before her heart.
Dax and Holland's relationship was my favorite part of the story. They were both strong personalities, so their interactions were filled with intensity. When they clashed, neither was willing to give in. When they loved, they burnt brightly. It was easy to see why their separation didn't leave much room for them to bond with other people.
The one major thing I didn't enjoy about this book was the way it was set up. Between the Prologue and Chapter 1, the book abruptly flipped back and forth between three different time frames. Since I was new to the series and was still trying to figure out the characters' relationships, it confused me a bit. From the first chapter on, the book was set in the past.Read more ›
