From The Big House To Your House has two hundred easy to prepare and tasty recipes for meals, snacks and desserts. Written by six women imprisoned in Texas, the recipes can be made from basic items a prisoner can purchase from their commissary, or people on the outside can purchase from a convenience or grocery store. Also included are many cost saving tips. This book is the result of the women's cooking experiences while confined at the Mountain View Unit, a woman's prison in Gatesville, Texas. They met and bonded in the G-3 dorm housing only prisoners with a sentence in excess of 50 years. While there isn't much freedom to be found when incarcerated, using items from the commissary to cook what they wanted offered them a wonderful avenue for creativity and enjoyment. The recipes in this book are the result of their culinary adventures. They hope these recipes will ignite your taste buds as well as spark your imagination to explore unlimited creations of your own. You are encouraged to make substitutions to your individual tastes and/or availability of ingredients. I bought this for my wife as she is currently in federal prison and asked me for a prison cookbook. Although some of the required ingredients are not sold at her compound, she said she very much enjoys this book. She has substituted some ingredients for others sold where she’s at and she said it has some pretty cool recipes and she loves it! Her friends in there ask to borrow it all the time and she also likes the little short stories told in it. I picked this one for the price, the reviews, and because it was wrote by women (it was only fitting I buy her a women’s cookbook since she’s female and I thought maybe they would sell the same ingredients at her facility versus buying her a cookbook wrote by men in prison since they don’t sell the same things on their commissary lists.. I have dated a male inmate before as well and he said he doesn’t have the same things Lindsey has at her prison). Overall I rate this 5/5. If you’re considering purchasing, do it! I too have been an inmate in the past and know how burnt out we get eating the same food all the time. I wish I would’ve had one of these for inspiration for my cooking in there. I was even surprised at some of these recipes as there were things I never would have thought of to combine to make certain sauces etc.

This book is awesome! My friend had to uhhh, go away for a bit.... so I bought him this book and had it sent to him. He said it was a huge hit and he and his "roommates" got a lot of use out of it by making many of the tasty recipes inside. He said it was so popular that when he "got out", he left it behind for the other guys to keep making recipes. They utilize a lot of things that are available in commissary to make more elevated dishes and he said they were pretty tasty! Plus, as a bonus, there are excerpts from the inmates who wrote the recipes and a bit of info about them, interesting read. Would definitely recommend!

I purchased 2 "cook books for the incarcerated" for my boyfriend. He said this one was by far the best one. The other was a total waste of $! There's a lot "facts" about non food related information in this book that would have been better left out. Im told the recipes he tried all came out as they were supposed to, but it was a lot of stuff he already knew about.
Another drawback, if one is in Maximum security, it may be difficult to obtain all the ingredients required for many of the recipes.

This cookbook has many good recipes if you are limited to only the ingredients that can be bought from prison commissary. It makes good use of items you would not necessarily think would go together; i.e. both Oriental Rice and Tangy & Crunchy Tuna Salad use peach drink mix and taste very good. My main complaint is the comments made between recipes that are mostly negative. They may be true at your prison or maybe at another, but why does a person need to know the negative aspects when it may not apply to you and if it does, you live it. This book came within the estimated time and was in great condition.

A lot of the recipes are very imaginative, and fun to make. I've enjoyed many that I would never have thought of making on my own. These are simple, easy to make and very tasty! I like trying new things, and have been amazed at how good most of these recipes are. I enjoyed knowing these were created by folks with limited resources, and unlimited ingenuity. I am currently working my way through the entire book, one recipe at a time and have shared several with some of my friends. Well worth the money. I'm glad these ladies took the time to create and share these imaginative recipes. Simply amazing!
