Nick Russell has done it again, only this time the sequel is better than the original. In this Mayberry meets Twin Peaks thriller we see just how volatile as sleepy little town can become when you throw drunk rednecks, angry Indians and rich city bullies into the mix.
Russell once again captures the atmosphere of a small rural town and all of the growing pains it must endure to survive in an ever changing world.

When a young half-breed Indian is found hanging, beaten and scalped, Sheriff Webber has few clues until a witness comes forward with the description of a vehicle that was in the area the night of the murder, a vehicle belonging to a local welder who thinks he can intimidate his way through life.

At the dead man's funeral a small band of Indians swear vengeance for the murder and the years of hatred from the white people of Big Lake. Then a chance encounter with a speeding teen-aged boy and his over bearing step-father from the city adds fuel to an already volatile situation. The investigation takes off, but all may not be as it seems.
Although a few of the characters are strictly archetypal and the role they fill is minor, there are others that are as real as any I've encountered in any story.

I read Big Lake Lynching in one sitting, which I rarely do, truly unable to stop.
I highly recommend it. Well done Mr. Russell.

I made the mistake of starting reading this book about an hour before bedtime. I was up until 2 am. I love Nick Russell's characters. Well not Archer or his dad or the Raffertys but I'd love to meet most of them. Warning: if you have not yet read "Big Lake" do so before reading this one so you don't kick yourself later.

It seemed as if I was surrounded by old friends, having read the first Big Lake book. All of the previous characters are here in this one. Russell does a commendable job of having the characters stand on their own in this volume while still playing off their first introduction in the first volume. It worked in the first and it seems to work in this one.

I was pleased with the story line in this volume--very pleased in fact. There were no surprises here. However, there was plenty of mystery. Russell did not withhold key bits of information until the last in order to tie up his mystery. The story unfolded as the investigation unfolded. All the 'logical' suspects remained logical suspects, there were no twists. All Russell did was to expertly weave the story to a natural conclusion.

At times the humor seemed a little contrived...but not too much. It wasn't knee-slapping funny but definitely brought a smile to my mouth. Humor was appropriately and judiciously inserted throughout the story. Russell is getting better at that.

For the price, it was very worth the time. In fact, I would have paid more. I look forward to the next installment of Big Lake, even though it very well may cost more.

I enjoyed this book as well as the first Big Lake book. The characters are interesting and the story had a lot of twists and turns. I think the dislike/disrespect between the mayor and the sheriff is overdone. It was fine in the first book, but it just got annoying in this book.

This author is great - he makes me want to travel to this lovely little place and meet the Sheriff to shake his hand and to snub the Mayor in any humiliating way I can! The story is well thought out and a really good, stress free and easy read. Well done, now where's the next novel?

After reading Big Lake, which I found to be an O.K. read, I was a bit curious to review this book when it was suggested on my reading list. So I read a sample and got hooked. Not only was the writing better, and the story line more interesting, I also found the characters leaping from the pages into my mind to create a tale that included me as an active observer. Not very far into the story I realized that the first book, Big Lake, was the perfect set up for this story. (Please read Big Lake first.). Together, these stories combine to build a solid base upon which to build a series of stories very much like the Series by W. Kent Kruger featuring Cork O'Conner as the focus character. Give me more; please!

Nick Russell takes us on another compelling journey with his wonderfully complex protagonist, Sheriff Jim Weber. This time Sheriff Weber must find the brutal killer who hung and scalped a young Indian man. This well-written novel leads us through terrifically quirky characters, intricate plot twists and an ending that will leave you scratching your head.

Just finished reading this exciting, funny, page turner by Nick Russell. Hopefully he will continue to take us to this sleepy town of Big Lake again so we can enjoy the antics of Sheriff Webber, the Mayor, and the Mayor's son (lol) and his staff. A book that really grabs you from the very beginning until the very end. Keep up the good work and look forward to a third book by this exciting new author.
