The author is or was a partner, rainmaker, and practice leader at an Am Law 100 firm who practiced law at Big Law firms for many years, including an Am Law/Vault top-20-ranked law firm in New York City, and another Am Law 100 law firm in another large U.S. city. The author: (i) has served in firm-wide and office-level leadership positions within their Big Law firms; (ii) has been involved in the hiring, compensation, promotion, performance evaluation, and termination processes for summer associates and attorneys in Big Law firms; and (iii) has also served on and worked with multiple committees, groups, and individuals (including C-suite officers) within Big Law firms. The author has received numerous national, statewide, and firm awards recognizing the author’s contributions to the legal profession, pro bono causes, and diversity and inclusion efforts, including recognition as one of the best attorneys among a very small subset of attorneys nationwide. This book opened my eyes to what it is like to work in big law, not just in a “oh, that sounds terrible” notion, but more that any preconceived notion I have had about working in a big law firm has now been all-but confirmed.
We see the examples in films and television. These harsh, demanding positions often come at the cost of the attorney’s health or sanity and I feel that myself and many others assumed that these roles were exaggerated for dramatic effect. Knowing those roles and working in a similar environment, I believe what this book contains is based on a factual experience.
However, my own personal experience working in the legal field left me both in shock and awe that the examples provided through this book were not only eerily accurate to my own journeys, but I found myself and my position relatable in many of the provided examples.
To anyone going into the legal profession, I strongly encourage that you read this book before you make any long term commitments to a big law firm. There is a wealth of knowledge in this book with a multitude of examples that have let me feeling as though I can now make an informed decision on whether or not to continue towards a position within a big law firm.
The constructive information has given me reassurance that though there is “the good, bad, and the ugly” - I am now certainly more prepared and armed with the expectations I never would have been provided otherwise.

As someone who has been working in Big Law for a few years, I find this book on point and so helpful for navigating going forward. Part III has detailed accounts of Big Law economics and compensation, which aren't something that can be accessed easily since Big Law firms are not transparent in terms of compensation. For folks who are starting out in Big Law or wanting to get into Big Law, Part I and Part II explain the basics and more and discusses useful tips on landing a job or progressing in one's career. I also appreciate the tips on how to work better and thrive in Big Law while being realistic about what to expect.

This book is a perfect gift for anyone who is interested in getting into Big Law or already in Big Law with the desire to figure out a path forward. I've bought a few copies for my friends in Big Law.

This book is tremendous. It is an accessible and easy to understand explanation of how large law firms work, and how lawyers working in them can optimize their chances of success. And it doesn’t pull any punches when describing the negative (and very real) parts of large law firm work. Having worked in both Big Law and regional “mid law”, I can say this book is spot on. While the book focuses on the large law firm experience, it would also be useful for people interested in regional or “mid law” firms. If you want to know about expectations for availability, work product, business development, origination, or how to get from associate to income partner to equity partner, read this book! I wish this book had been available when I was starting my legal career.

DO NOT be intimidated by the length here folks, as the author provides a helpful guide at the very start of the book. This book is a comprehensive and honest guidebook to the ins, outs, highs, and lows of Big Law. GREAT spread of information and tips/tricks and resources are wonderful! Though all can surely learn something, I highly recommend for first gen law students; it touches on so many things I wish I would have known!!!!

As this well-written book explains the ins and outs of Big Law, I wish it was available when I was a law student, especially when I was preparing for the OCI program. The author clearly knows the hiring process, the day-to-day experience, and what it takes to succeed in a large law firm. The book does not hold any punches in explaining what you can expect throughout your career in a Big Law firm. With the logical and organized layout, the author has provided an invaluable resource for those considering a career in Big Law and those trying to navigate from the inside. I highly recommend all aspiring attorneys and current law students read this book.

Unobscuring Big Law

I am a junior associate in a Big Law firm, and this detailed, comprehensive volume taught me more about Big Law in 700 pages than I have picked up from either law school or my years practicing. Whether or not I decide to go in house, ultimately, this book provides a number of strategies and perspectives that I had not considered previously. Not sure if partners at major firms will be glad this book exists, but I certainly am. Buy it and stop puzzling at some of the truly mindboggling structures in place in law firms.
