King Vidor's 1925 WWI epic, THE BIG PARADE was one of the most important Hollywood productions from the entire silent era. It put MGM on the map as a prestigious studio, catapulted John Gilbert to major stardom, and set the quality standard for war films in years to come. Made a scant 7 years after the armistice, THE BIG PARADE contains an inherent, honest authenticity that demands respect and admiration from anyone watching it today, 88 years after its release. Who would dare question or criticize the film's depiction of The Great War - either in an historic or dramatic context? Indeed, it's practically like we're watching a documentary from that time, whether it be the spot-on, chillingly realistic battle vignettes or the sincere, sensitive romantic scenes between John Gilbert and his French sweetheart played by the charming Renee Adoree.

Warner Home Video's Blu-ray Book Edition of THE BIG PARADE has been fully restored from the original camera negative, and the result will take your breath away. There's nary a speck to be seen in the immaculate 4k scanned, 1080p resolution transfer, which includes all the original tints. The outstanding full orchestra score is by Carl Davis, and integrates popular WWI tunes like "Over There" and "You're in the Army Now" with ominous crescendos underscoring the action sequences.

The special features are a collector's delight: a handsomely illustrated 64-page book with notes by historian Kevin Brownlow, an audio commentary by historian Jeffrey Vance with excerpts from King Vidor, a half hour short from 1925 called "Studio Tour", and the original theatrical trailer.

This cinematic landmark definitely ranks as one of the major vintage home video releases in recent years, and belongs on the shelf of any self-respecting classic film buff, right next to the Blu-rays of WINGS (1927) and ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930).

My highest recommendation.

If you're wondering about the region issue...

This is a great piece of movie making. Not a BIG MESSAGE picture like say, All Quiet on the Western Front, nor the comic book inanity of most block-buster war pictures (and this was a blockbuster in its day). Instead what we get is a brilliantly put together, intelligent piece of Hollywood entertainment, that treats its story, its characters and its audience with respect. Which, btw, could describe almost all of King Vidor's films. But you know all that.

More to the point the 4K remastering from an original negative (!) is almost flawless (there do appear to be a couple of less than pristine inserts of less than a minute in total). If you've ever seen some of the studio publicity stills from the era (Kevin Brownlow's Hollywood-The Pioneers book has many examples) with their glossy, luminescent glow, this is what the entire film looks like. It is stunning! And if you have blu-ray buy the blu-ray version. Not all films look significantly different on blu-ray (especially many silent films) but this is one that very definitely benefits from the format. And the Carl Davis score is magnificent (my only gripe - the film's original 1925 score still exists - it would've been nice to have had both).

Which brings us to the real issue for anyone outside the US. Is the disc region locked? And the great news is that the disc is region free.

High-quality release of an epic film

Twenty-four years ago I taped this off TCM and the result was grainy, jumpy in places and dragging in others; no one had corrected the anomalies inherent in hand-cranked filmmaking. Happily, the film was completely restored for home video release - the speed is consistent throughout and the overall picture is probably better than at its premiere. The Blu-Ray version has a twenty-plus minute tour of MGM Studios in 1925. This is proper treatment for a film that was the "Gone With the Wind" or "Titanic" of its day.

Powerful movie. Just a joy to watch the restored version. I was amazed, it looks like it was shot yesterday. Obviously the best cameras and lens were used in the making of the film. Gives you a chance to see what it was like when it first came out in theaters. John Gilbert (Greta Garbo's main squeeze) is wonderful in the lead.
Well worth adding to your DVD collection.

I would just briefly say that this masterpiece of early cinemas has never before looked as good as this, as it is based upon a print only recently correctly identified as from the original negative, and it probably has rarely if ever sounded as good as this with a new recording of Carl Davis' score originally composed for the Thames Silents broadcast of 20+ years ago. I write from England, and can confirm that although this edition is described as Region A blu ray, it plays perfectly in my Region B British player.

THE BIG PARADE was first introduced to me with a Laser Disc that was purchased. David Gill and Kevin Brownlow brought it back to prominence with their British theatrical and TV screenings with a Carl Davis score. Now the Blu-ray release enhances the experience in every way as the newly found camera negative has been used for this restoration -- and the results are stunning! This is one of the great films dealing when men and their experiences as soldiers and to have it restored and presented on Blu-ray is something to get excited about. We now have the opportunity to see WINGS, THE BIG PARADE, and ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (both silent and sound versions) in amazing restorations.

It was a rush to introduce this film to my husband and son (who both loved it too). This haunting silent was entirely deserving of the care that has been lavished on it. King Vidor's greatest accomplishment.

Concerning the usability of this blu-ray in Europe: it is not region A/1, it is region free - from a technical perspective - and thus runs marvelously in my European blu-ray player. Only officially it's "not authorized for sale or rental outside the USA and Canada".
The film: at least the first half of the film seems to me to be more a melodramatic entertainment. And I'm afraid the filmmakers didn't have a clue about WWI reality in Europe ...
