Big waste of time and money!

This entire book is written by quotes and paraphrases by other authors! Every page contains other peoples work, not the authors original thought, words or ideas.

The author basically wrote a book of other peoples work and is selling it as a critque of their ideas, original thoughts and writing. The very limited content that is his own is repetitive, boring, nonsense and doesn’t even match the table of contents or headings. A major dissappointment.

Lots of quotes by others and endless references to what other authors said through paraphrasing. It’s like the author couldn’t think of anything on his own but wanted to publish another book.

Lama Surya Das is a modern day sage that has within him some of the most profound and enlightning words. With all the questions we have today in our modern world the one thing that we all have in common is that we still ask them. This wondeful book can cut through some of the worldly chatter and opens up your mind to the answers we all seek. I would recommend this book to Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike. Wonderful read and worth every penny..........

This is a wonderfully deep and profound book, written in a straightforward and easily understandable fashion. Rich in wisdom and quotable phrases. It is a small hardback, beautifully well bound with old fashioned type thick paper (rough edged) like an antique volume. This is a treasure.

This book is Lama Surya Das at his best: very stimulating, humorous, drawing on the widest range of philosophy and literature, and offering us the benefit of his extraordinary insights, attained after many years of meditation and study. Although this book has a picture of the Buddha on the front, Lama Surya Das frequently refers to common themes in the teachings of all the major traditions. I'd highly recommend it to any intelligent, open-hearted individual, irrespective of their religion. A must-read book!

A sensible, engaging stimulus to contemplation before action

He sets out conversationally and casually a Buddhism-lite approach that anybody can agree with. That is, he argues from a genially non-theistic, contemplative but engaged direction the need to look within ourselves before we rush out to wear ourselves out trying to heal every affliction in the world. He advises taking time first to focus on key issues that we can practically change within our own outlook, and these chapters show how this reorientation can bring a calmer, more balanced perspective into our own attitude that then will radiate by our actions to others.

The discussions become more involving as the book progresses, with the later ones being the liveliest. His chapters that place gay rights and same-sex relationships within the continuum of civil rights make his arguments cogently and sensibly. Likewise, he touches upon how sexual love can serve as a spark for a "jet fuel" of a higher octane, more diffused or rarified compassion. This topic gets rushed over in a chapter about the viability of one's passions, but it's a subject that could have merited more attention. He ends with a fine discussion of how we need to ask ourselves the one Big Question, the one that matters most to us, and that the answer, given time and reflection, will come.

Why four stars? The editing needed revision. It flows pretty smoothly, but feels as often with authors who write a lot of similar books on their specialty as if typed out more from a rapid burst of productivity than a careful composition. For example, he misspells "Eli Weisel" and maddeningly his colleague "Thich Nhat Han" the whole way through; he also forgets that Hollywood and not Sunset's the boulevard where one walks over the stars in the sidewalks.

Not my usual reading, but I liked his essays in "Buddhism in America" (see my review, ed. Al Rapaport, 1998). I figured a Jewish-born, Long Island sports-crazy teen turned Tibetan Dzogchen guru might be worth hearing more from. This book was checked out from my library, after I'd noticed it on the new shelf, nearly two years ago, so some of my neighbors must have been listening to the former Jeffrey Miller. This is one of many titles that he's written, and he writes in a manner where you can "hear" his voice on the page easily.

Therefore, for readers who might be put off by more Buddhist books, this serves as a stimulus to get one pondering. He avoids jargon and prefers a manner akin to a counselor rather than a lama. You get enough Buddhism to understand where he's come from and where he's going, but the application of his advice can fit any seeker's path.

There are few better ways to let someone find his own wisdom than by asking questions. Das just does that and in each answer helps you---through analogy, literature, and further questions---find the answers. The chapter on karma is excellent and helps us grasp its nuanced nature(nothing happens by accident but by all prior actions; great insight into the difference bewteen karma and fate) and on handling anger(as the Buddha said, if someone offers you the "gift" of anger do not accept, and it stays will the giver) and by taking a "sacred pause". A book to be loved, hightlighted and underlined, and read again.
