Editorial Reviews
2018 release from this music collective headed by The National's Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. In 2008, Aaron Dessner sent Justin Vernon an instrumental sketch of a song called "Big Red Machine" for Dark Was The Night. This was before they had met in person. Justin wrote a song to it, interpreting the Big Red Machine title as a heart. Ten years of friendship later, there are 10 more songs. Big Red Machine. Each song includes a large number of collaborators via the People platform and the record was produced by Justin and Aaron with longtime collaborator Brad Cook and engineered by Jonathan Low primarily at Aaron's studio Long Pond in Upper Hudson Valley, NY.

Firstly, presentation wise the LP looks great, the artwork is gorgeous, colourful gatefold sleeve, large fold out lyrics sheet/poster and custom die cut inner sleeve.
Musically it's clear the protagonists have cut loose and had fun making this. It's a digital studio confection making full use of drum machines, synths and digital processing, with a lot of atmospheric texture going on behind the vocals and beats. There's a strong modern RnB and hiphop influence in the way the tracks are constructed from the rythm track as a foundation. Justin's has a great expressive voice which ranges from fluid lines to spoken word poetry.
First track, Deep green starts of with a spare eliptical drum pattern and builds into a mutated soul track. The album just gets better from there. Track 3 Lyla is the highlight for me. Massive synthetic and live percussion and a melodic chorus. My interest sags on the later tracks that break into a piano ballad or guitar tune, I am much more interested in the experimental ones, all of which succeed admirably.
The vinyl is cut from the same digital files as the CD not Analogue tape or HiRes digital, so unless your CD player is crap or nonexistent you could save yourself some money and buy the CD, which sounds a little clearer than the vinyl.
