A dedicated group of professionals restored this badly cut film to a version that Fuller wanted. This is a "chamber" war story with a focus on character interactions and details rather than a a collection of sweeping battle scenes.
This is not poignant and humanistic film that is :All Quiet on the Western Front" but memorable in its own way.
The extra features are quite interesting as well with discussions of what was required to include the missing portions pf the film. Fuller and Marvin were not alive for the restoration interviews but their personalities enhance the flavor of the extras.

This was my favorite boyhood WW2 from the past and was glad to see an additional 47 minutes of never before seen footage added to the film. It was sharp and clear, because it was digitally restored, and it featured originally deleted scenes, such as "Arab Fighters in the desert cutting the ears off dead soldiers" and other lengthy battle scenes, with tons of explosions, squad rifle action, and more, a treasure for the 80s era WW2 Hollywood Movie Buffs. You will not be disappointed. Features 2 DVDs: Disc 1 has the long reconstructed movie. Disc 2 has alternate scenes, and commentary on restoring the movie, a documentary entitled "The Real Glory" Reconstructing the Big Red One, a War Department Film "The Fighting First", 1980 Promo Reel, Theatrical Trailer, Radio Spots, and lastly, the 2004 Reconstruction Trailer-Stills Gallery. Also priced just right $.

Specs: 162 Minutes, Widescreen, Digitally Remastered Movie with Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Made in 2004, includes 2 DVDs. Warner Bros.

The Big Red One is my favorite Sam Fuller film. I had seen it when it was released and this Reconstruction version improves what was a very good film to begin with. The scenes of liberating a concentration camp were particularly compelling. The films of Sam Fuller are an acquired taste and while I don't like all of them I very much like The Big Red One, Steel Helmet, Verboten, and a film deserving much greater attention, White Dog. The Big Red One - The Reconstruction is a film I would recommend to anyone interested in Fuller or in the genre of war films.

Not quite what I remembered it to be as it had been a while since I had viewed last. still it was enjoyable to watch.

First of all, Amazon's description of the film is incorrect when it says "follows the men from D-Day [1944] to the liberation of the Nazi death camps." The film actually begins with the invasion of Vichy-held French North Africa in November 1942.

I enjoyed The Big Red One when I saw it in a theater in 1980. Lee Marvin, of course, was a big star at that time, and Mark Hamill had already starred as Luke Skywalker in the first two Star Wars movies. Viewing the film again 36 years later, I still enjoyed it, but after seeing some of the more recent WWII films like Saving Private Ryan, it's not quite as high on my list, although I still give it a solid 4 stars. It's well worth watching for any aficionado of war movies.

Trivia: At one time, John Wayne was considered for the role that Lee Marvin played. (In any case, Wayne died about the time production began, and in his 70s, he was really too old to play a sergeant in the Army.)

Note: The Amazon Instant Video (streaming) version is the 113-minute 1980 theatrical release. A restored 162-minute version, The Big Red One: The Reconstruction, was premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. I have not seen the longer version.

One of the first to depict combat with a (mostly) unflinching honesty. A harbinger of Saving Private Ryan and the Band of Brothers miniseries. Always liked Lee Marvin, he has a good mix of cynicism and duty to protect his troops. He does his job and hates war.

A classic WWII movie. A good cast and a compelling story.

Gave this as birthday present to Hubby. He said added scenes made the movie grittier as the director no doubt had intended. One of the best war movies Lee Marvin made, we both agree. Delivery in the mail was fast.
