I have always considered this a good movie, but it was too picaresque. The shorter cut lacks a central theme, and the movie suffers. This longer cut adds in that theme, and viscerally. It promotes this from good war movie to great human war story. The only version I will ever watch again.

As well, it allows Lee Marvin the space to turn in the greatest performance of his career as he embodies that theme, "the only glory in war is surviving."

Theatrical Movie has been restored in HD. Sharp, Clean Picture....Much better compared to old DVD. Reconstruction Version is in Standard Definition. I had never seen the Reconstruction Version, this was done long after the director, Samuel Fuller died. That version is difficult to follow and at times, didn't make any sense, doesn't flow well at all. Editing is poor as well. I could have definitely gone an entire lifetime without seeing Lee Marvin approached by the homosexual German doctor....(shudders)...Overall, Original Theatrical Blu-Ray movie is Great.... Reconstruction Version you may watch just Once, you can live without it just fine.

Great movie. This is a war movie made when Hollywood made movies still, not all these movies trying to be imperfect to make it seem more real to the viewer. I like Movies shows where you escape while watching it. This movie is like that

An excellent movie, probably the most realistic ever made, without being unduly gory. This surely is one of Lee Marvin's best roles, and he handled it magnificently. All the rest of the cast also were marvelous. Great script, fine direction, beautifully filmed, absolutely top-notch all the way around. If some youngster in your family has dreams of enlisting, have them watch this first.

One of the best war movies. Saw it when it was released and have caught it a few times since. Decided to find it on DVD and watched it the first day and will watch it again.

Another birthday gift for the teenager that we watched together on his birthday. Great movie and he's thrilled to have his own copy to watch whenever he would like now!

I've been a fan of Sam Fuller's original product since release and had no idea it had suffered so much at the hands of the studio. The expanded story is almost an entirely new movie with all the grit and fine acting of the original with new tales, restored characters, expanded scenes that suddenly make something else make sense. But through it all veteran actor and World War II veteran Marvin shines in a way he probalby never did before. More than just a personality like some of his contemporaries, Lee was an actor who became the role. His gritty performance as the Sergeant was among his best and had it been showcased in full light might have brought at least another Academy Award nomination. Needless to say I really recommend this versio of The Big Red One.
