Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf

Review

Bay Area MC Charizma and his crate-diggin' pal Peanut Butter Wolf entered the game in rap's blissful Golden Age. Due to label drama and Charizma's tragic 1993 passing, most of their work was vaulted - until now. Big Shots unveils classic one-two sonic jabs from a duo whose affinity for hip-hop should make Common proud. The tracks are unearthed in time-capsule fashion (nothing much altered) with 15 first-class jams serving as an ideal early-'90s hip-hop snapshot. Most of the innocent-sounding tunes like "Devotion" and "Fair Weathered Friend" boast Wolf's static-stamped production and Charizma's lighthearted vocab. Sure, joints like the simplistic love letter "Talk About a Girl" and its familiar drum-machine thumps and piano loops might not make a peep if they were freshly recorded songs, but as reminiscing material goes, Big Shots is a golden ticket to when it was all so simple.

I bought this a week and a half ago on a whim, I was looking up my Kool Keith and waiting for the order when I saw the cover of the record. It caught my eye because it was so 90's and so sick at the same time. When I looked at the reviews and sampled the tracks I was struck by the retro sound. Then when I looked at the info on the record my heart sank to the bottom of the floor. It was no wonder I had not heard of Charizma, because he was gone. I sampled Method and cried man. The young man was my age at the time of his passing and would have gone to bigger and better things had he not been cut down. I don't want to make this about his passing but it hurts like all the senseless killings. If you love hip hop and can appreciate the 80's and 90's then cop the cd and sit back let Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf take you back to a simpler time. R.I.P. Charizma, I love son, you would have been a giant!

This right here is a taste from the golden era. I've been listening to Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf for a long time. Charizma is one of those emcees that don't need to sound tough or even cuss. That just tells you he's a skilled emcee. These guys are probably one of the best MC/DJ combos I ever known digging through. I would appreciate it if PBW added "High School Love" on the album though.

Legendary DJ Peanut Butter Wolf of Stones Throw Records recorded Big Shots with emcee Charizma from 1991 to 1993 but only released it commercially at the turn of the century. Notwithstanding the large time gap, Big Shots still sounded dope when it was introduced to the greater public several years after its inception. Charizma is a sassy, nimble rhymer with neat moves over the rhythms. The production by Peanut Butter Wolf exhibits the great talent and skill on the boards and turntables that the famous DJ would only develop more after Big Shots. You can tell that for its epoch, Big Shots is not your average rap album simply because of its deep artistry but mostly because of its standout production and beats.

If you like Stezo, KMD, UMC's, then you will definately dig this. Pick it up, nice production from PBW--you can tell from his earlier work here, that he would later become a force to be wreckin' with!!!

I get chills listening to this album. Just understanding the story of Charizma and PB Wolf is enough to make you buy this album. Go to stonesthrow.com to get the full story.
This album just brings a whole new sound and feel to rap music as a whole. I don't know it just sounds different from any kind of rap music that i've ever heard, in a good way. I can't believe that Charizma isn't around now, it makes me pissed to see how succesful he could have been if he just kept doing what he loved. Alas, this album is all that's left.
The first couple of seconds of the album just sets things off. The first song is a classic, I don't give an F what anyone says, the beat is just exceptional and the lyrics are hair raising. Then Charizma just takes it from there, coming down on the listener from many points of view. PB Wolf produces exceptionally well, matching perfectly with Charizma's style. For example, "Jack the Mack" has a very nice drum beat with human voices bringing the song to a climax. But if I had to summarise this album with one song then I would pick "Ice Cream Truck". It's the perfect song to represent the care-free attitude that envelopes this whole album. Charizma and PB don't stick to formulas, they do their own thing and succeed very well at it. I feel really sad as I write this because I never knew this MC and he's not around now for me to tell him how prestine and exceptional this album really is. I sincerely urge you to buy this album right now to pay your respects to an exceptional MC that nobody knew.
Nobody knew........
