It is like coming home to see Emily and Mark, Michael and Claudia, Nathan and Julie, and Doug and Chelsea. If you have not met them before, you may want to go back to previous novels.
This is a book about relationships between these characters; people and dogs; people and horses; and the expected military spin. Of course there is the new romance between Patrick and just discharged, Lauren.
Patrick, our leading man, is a newly minted Montana cowboy, former film student, who has a personal movie running in his head. His inner script writer sees all in the context of how the script is supposed to run, and the story includes lots of references to movie scenes that relate.
The romance begins with Patrick falling into a mud puddle at first sight of leading lady. She faints, and he carries her off. Sound like a movie?
A wealth of detail about Buchman’s interest in cooking and other topics keep this novel moving right along, but nothing satisfies like his love of place.
Buchman captures Montana as “an incredibly visual land, one side anchored by the incredible Great Plains and the other end skewered by the majestic Rockies” all covered by a brilliant blue dome.
